Wesnoth Organizational Updates Permanent archive for updates on decisions or reports made by the Battle for Wesnoth Project Council and the Wesnoth, Inc. Board of Directors. Moderator:Forum Moderators
Several of our mainline campaigns are in the works for upgrades at the moment, which includes adding characters and enhancing existing scenarios. We are looking for more artwork to supplement these upgrades, including the following:
We are happy to announce that Wesnoth is now able to accept donations on Liberapay. While Wesnoth does rely on the work of dedicated volunteers, no project can function completely cost-free. Revenue from the Apple App Store and from donations goes towards maintaining our servers,...

It looks good at the bottom since the page isnt too long; i had no problem finding it.
There have been numerous important forum posts and wiki articles written by users and developers. We reference these pages a lot, and decided to put them together in a convenient list. ------
Write clearly, be nice to others, and be very careful when posting anything related to politics or religion. When asking for help, remember that everyone here is a volunteer. Prefer editing your previous post over double posting. No animated avatars or graphical signatures. Don’t plagiarize...

The Community Guidelines have been updated.
The Moderation section has been expanded to cover Discord moderation issues.
For text containing full sentences, changing or adding strings is allowed when the text is plain wrong in a way that would cause issues for players relying on the text for something else (ie: if the objectives say to kill a named enemy unit that no longer exists in the...
As required by the Constitution, an initial Project Council consisting of, at a minimum, the General Code, Mainline Content, and Art Direction maintainers has been formed. As the Project Manager, I also decided to split off specific areas so they can have their own maintainer who is particularly...
I'm opening this thread to track/discuss ideas for some ideas for overall project direction as we continue through the 1.17 dev cycle and further. From 1.12 to 1.14, we had a major goal in releasing on Steam, which we achieved thanks to Vultraz's leadership during that time. Since then,...

Actually, part of the Discord is mirrored on IRC. You can check the Wesnoth IRC archive here : https://irclogs.wesnoth.org/
Based on the discussion here, the best thing we could try and do to significantly improve Wesnoth overall as well as its maintainability in the longer term would be to replace Wesnoth's current custom GUI toolkit with an external framework that we then wouldn't need to maintain ourselves.
To start...

Since this has been necro'ed, I'd like to mention that there's potentially a major problem with choosing TGUI as a replacement for GUI2 – although it has a [o]lot[/i] of useful things in it, and I think it has most of what would be needed to replace GUI2, it has absolutely no support for the middle...
Right now, the unit initiating an attack always hit first even if it is with a bite or a dagger against a unit equip with a 6m (18 feet) long pike.
I would like to propose introducing a probability for the attacker to hit first taking in account the relative size of weapon use.
A weapon will be...

Reading this more than 20 years later. It was a great idea as it seems, i love the game as it stands with the first strike for spearmen and clashers. Thank you guys for the great game you guys developed for us all to enjoy. Hope you are all doing great and maybe some day we can play some friendly...
Hi all! It's been requested a few times so I'm putting here some in progress and upcoming projects for the mainline campaign lineup. To begin with, I'd like to mention that it's a goal of mine to put some of the campaigns into arcs to help improve the cohesiveness of our storyline as well as the...

Wesnoth GitHub repo's issue#10000 is a tracker on the current activities of the Mainline SP works and you can get more up-to-date information there.
With the conclusion of the Project Manager elections, as per Article 22 of Wesnoth's Constitution, it's now time to have the Board elections. All three positions are open, so we will need to have at least three candidates. If there are more than three candidates, then the three with the highest...

I nominate gfgtdf and wedge009.
I know it's a bit late, but i just wanted to say, i also appreciate the nomination. But for the time being I also respectfully declined, since i don't have that much mental energy left to put into wesnoth currently.
Hi, so as a candidate I decided to write a little about why I decided to be a candidate and what I would like to push for as a part of the board.
So during the last cycle, I didn't really see any major movements or ideas from the board, neither for increasing the budget (so earning money) or...

Probably I'm a bit late to the party, but on the other hand I decided to wait until the election started to make my own statement.
As you know, I became a member of the Board in 2022 (because Iris resigned); although real life made me less present and active than I wanted, I oversaw us joining SPI...
Okay so the title is kind of facetious, but a little bit serious too.
There are spoilers to follow. If you have not played much mainline singleplayer yet, or would like to find out about this new lore later on, please disregard this post.
Basically, along the lines of the previous discussi...

Oops, I didn't see how old the original post was! Sorry for thread necromancy guys
As per Article 12, there must be an election for who will take on the project manager role for the current development cycle, and the requirement to be considered as a candidate for the project manager election is to meet the requirements for being considered an active developer for the previous 18...

There's only one or two who might not have known - everyone else would've either been included in the developer group ping about it on Discord or I've otherwise seen them mention it so I know from that they're aware.
Given that issues have consistently come up related to following Wesnoth's Typography Style Guide, I felt it made sense to open this thread to ask a couple questions:
Is anyone opposed to following those guidelines?
If no, is anyone opposed to adding a CI check to validate, at least as much as...

Regarding 1, I haven't read the style guide in detail recently, so don't take this as endorsement of the specific policies it prescribes. However, I think we should have a style guide and should endeavour to follow it consistently, even if I may disagree with some details here and there.
Something that's been discussed on and off for a while now has been moving Wesnoth to be an associated project under Software in the Public Interest (SPI). The motivations for this move being:
The single largest cost for the project is getting our taxes filed, by a large margin. While a flat...

Speaking as a Board member this time.
If you've got any questions about these changes, feel free to send me a private message (either here or on Discord) and I'll try to answer them.
As stated in another thread, Iris has stepped down as a member of the Wesnoth Inc Board. Therefore an election will be held for that open position so the Board can continue to have three members as required.
The rules:
Any active developer (aka you were eligible to vote in the most recent Project...

As stated here, one of my suggested things for the 1.17.x cycle is a new MP RPG Co-Op Scenario/Mini-Campaign. However, I need approval for the plot of the scenario/campaign so that there are no...
I'm putting some ideas for future 1.x content (mainly SP) development plans here. This thread's purpose is mainly to cover revisions to existing campaigns, not to cover any new additions to mainline lore on the SP or MP side. I'll list them in order of my personal priority, although that...

Do we have clear ideas of who will work on each of these, and an estimate of when things will be done? I'm concerned that people won't make small improvements to campaigns, because we expect someone else to make a larger change to the campaign. For example, back in 2020 it seemed that a complete...
To document something I brought up on Discord where it's easier to find:
What are people's thoughts on using GOG or itch.io instead of SourceForge for the Windows and macOS releases if the SmartScreen/anti-virus problem gets worse (aka not something that's being considered to be done now or in the...

I feel like it sends a mixed signal to have to mention that there's another download method that may trigger your antivirus software or SmartScreen at all to be honest, nor does it seem like it makes much sense to essentially say "here's three ways to...
Since the player has already played the basic tutorial, this can focus on larger strategic considerations for new players.
This would appear immediately after the basic tutorial in the campaign menu in default order
This would move Li’sar from the basic tutorial to the additional tutorial.
Some...

I think a tutorial is the wrong place for plot points and character development, and I don't like the idea of splitting the two tutorial leaders into separate scenarios, either. The basic idea of a second tutorial is sound, however; but if we want to add a second tutorial, I'd prefer both tutorials...
Currently we have a rule not to allow new api in stable releases (1.16).
This however has some major problems:
During development releases we simply don't know what people (umc authors) might need, so if we want to add something we have two options:
1) Add it and risk not only doing for for...

I don't think it's a straight up bad idea to add new features to stable, but I would say you should probably only add small features. Supporting a new type of widget in the Lua dialog system, or anything that's pure Lua in implementation, are probably find. Major new features are definitely not...
Now that the first financial status report is available for Wesnoth, Inc in order to provide background, the next topic I want to hopefully get some opinions on is how commissions are handled, both in general and then more specifically for the SP campaign overhaul that Yumi(nemaara) has...
Pentarctagon wrote: July 25th, 2020, 5:11 pm
A commission for the scripts and level design and then collaborating on the actual implementation with others is a possible alternative as well.
So far it seems like the easiest way has been for me to just...
Previous releases have been made based on fairly subjective arguments of whether or not enough has changed or if there have any notable fixes and-or improvements implemented. This has resulted in nobody, users or developers, really knowing when the next release will be and therefore when the newest...

I've updated the initial post to reflect what's been discussed and agreed upon so far.
I've been thinking about the general state of our SP lore/campaigns for some time, and am thinking that, although unfortunate, some of our mainline campaigns should be removed to improve the quality of Wesnoth's singleplayer. I'll put my reasoning below; for now I'll state that I think we should...

While the gap is big enough, its not really good storytelling to show two completely different cultures like that without any reflection of what happened in-between (note that this doesn’t have to be overt, but there should be hints).
The existing Lua GUI2 API for custom dialogs is very procedural and not very well-designed. It was only ever intended to be temporary anyway, from what I understand, and people have kept patching it and patching it, adding new features rather than fixing the design flaws. (Every other GUI2 function...

Also post_show might not be needed anymore aswell, I mean you can probably just query these values from the dialog after calling show ()
As of #4446, which was merged into 1.15 and backported to 1.14, a new column will be populated by wesnothd for clients that connect to the official multiplayer server. The motivation for this change is that a question has come up during discussions more than once regarding how many players get...

Given the position packagers are in, I'd expect that making it an error to not have a value set would simply be patched out anyway.
