Re: carryover gold problem
Look at the title bar for the version number. I run Arch and am tracking -dev and my fork, so I generally compile from scratch. The Arch repository has wesnoth, and it shows as modified because the Arch maintainer fiddled with it. Apt-get or whatever probably knows the version number, too. IIRC that...

Re: carryover gold problem
I've been working heavily on HttT on 1.13.5+dev. Just a couple days ago I audited the carryover reports and could find no issues. For each scenario the report used correct figures and did the math correctly. At the start of the next scenario, each used the correct base and increased that by the carr...

Re: Ambush? I think I don't get it.
There's two ideas going at once in this thread. The first is, given the name "ambush" does it fulfill the implied promise of the name and, if not, how could it do so? The second is, given the way the ability works, is "ambush" an appropriate name and, if not, what would be a more...

Re: Hexes May Be Miles Across--But How Many?
The scale is 1 hex equals 1 hex. The problem is turning on the hex grid feature IRL so you can get an accurate comparison.

Re: Ambush? I think I don't get it.
The definition of ambush: 1. a surprise attack by people lying in wait in a concealed position. Normally, when walking along and an enemy unit comes into sight, you see a message and have the ability to press 't' to continue moving. This is because you saw the enemy at a distance. The 'ambush' abili...

Re: Q about ranged attacks, and a Q about The Game
While we're discussing this sort of thing, and not bothering to see if there's a thread, has anyone taken a look at setting the attack movement cost to something smaller than 10,000 moves? I'm wondering if the AI can handle things like move-1 attack-3 move-2 for a total 6MP unit instead of move-1 at...

Re: Ambush? I think I don't get it.
Yeah. I'd be much happier of the English used a different word. "Ambush" sets an expectation which isn't met. Dunno if "Forest Knowledge" really does it since that explains all sorts of things, like why Elves move so quickly, but it, at least, does not set an un-met expectation. ...

Re: Ambush? I think I don't get it.
The fact that the ambushed unit can start the 'actual' attack makes more sense as a retaliation to being caught and held up - the Orcish Assassin's first response to an elf appearing out of nowhere and getting in their way would be to start throwing poison knives at them. That's it, exactly. What i...

Re: Q about ranged attacks, and a Q about The Game
You're comparing community developed, open source software with company developed, proprietary software. And confusing the designer of the game with the programming team. BfW started with the vision on one man, too. The difference is whether that vision was taken to a community for further developme...

Re: Ambush? I think I don't get it.
Well, I'm smarter than the AI (OK, debatable, but I'd like to think so). I see my Assassin gets one attack and one counter, and won't kill the Ranger; but to that the Ranger gets one counter and one attack and probably will kill my Assassin. However, if I say, "On the LEFT cheek, please" a...

Re: Q about ranged attacks, and a Q about The Game
So a unit is surrounded. It has LOTS of hit points, and can survive all six of the spearmen it faces. But, now, it also has to worry about the TWELVE spearmen behind them throwing javelins? That's up to 222HP damage, nearly double the 126HP threat it faces from just the six, now. Gonna be real hard ...

Re: Ambush? I think I don't get it.
So I'm wandering along (playtesting, too) and WHAM I run into an ambush. My heart stops for a moment, then I remember, the ambushing unit really doesn't do anything. It just stops my unit's movement, then holds it with ZOC. No actual ambush/attack. Just stopped waiting for the ambushing unit to get ...

Re: Q about ranged attacks, and a Q about The Game
How would a counter-attack work? The archer fires from 1 hex removed, over the fighter. The counter-attack damages who? The fighter? Does he get a counter-counter-attack? It seems to me the current system, while it does feel lacking, offers the advantage of allowing the attacked unit to counter dire...

Re: Do the Elvish Shyde/Sylph fly, or not?
The concept of vision sounds good. Be careful not to over-complicate it. I would suggest the mechanics, if they don't already, operate the same as movement. Use the same terrain adjustment types and offer abilities and effects similar to those which movement has quick->far-sighted slowed->near-sight...
