Re: General tip: Consider not drawing eyes

Correction: I did not intend that you would draw a face to look like it does not have have eyes, but instead that you don't need to draw eyes to do that. granularity perceived distance plane which represents a larger plane algorithm modularity http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/confused/confused001...

Re: General tip: Don't draw eyes

Regardless the issue was about granularity, if you have to draw a face/head into an area of 8x10 pixels, you might just as well go for a more realistic look and skip the eyes. But then if you have like 15x20 pixels to spare for the face/head area, it's not such a problem. Um, look, not to be rude, ...

Re: Vyncyn sprites Mountain-humans

Looking good, but the golems could use some more hue-shifting in their palettes, possibly a bit higher contrast as well (I'm assuming they're constructed from rock?). The lvl 3 also suffers from 'jaggies.' Adding some quick AA would take care of that problem. That giant bird in the middle is awesome...

Re: Mudcrawlers

LordBob, everyone here knows you're wicked good at creating portraits and story art, but at this rate, I can also see you becoming a top-notch pixel artist very shortly. I especially love the "inverse-morphing" recovery in the attack animation. ^_^ Just one small thing I'd like to point ou...

Re: Standing and idle animations?

I'm not sure the inflating chest is necessarily a good idea. While I understand that it makes it a heck of a lot more readable as a breathing animation, I don't think that his armor would allow for that kind of flexibility. Right now the chest is stretched/distorted to the point where his armor appe...

Re: Thinking up names

One trick that I employ is taking an existing word/name and spelling it backwards. Naturally most of the time that result will require some tweaking to get it to a readable (or even pronounceable) form, but it can often give you an excellent starting point. I also try to look at words from other cou...

Re: Cavalry Base Sprites

It makes sense something like that would exist but I have never seen it. It don't think it matters, but nevertheless I made a second version with the lance a bit closer. The lance itself is slightly altered too in both versions... I'm not sure which one is the best. Personally, I still prefer the o...

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so... wesnoth_portrait_mockup_4 copy.png Unfortunately, it ended up looking a lot different than the original, but perhaps there are a few things about it you might find useful. *shrug* Note that I'm not by any means a portrait artist, I just dabble in p...

Re: Gallery of One's Failure

Also beware of shading the legs too much like straight cylinders... I know it can be hard to get definition on something this small (boy do I know it! ), but even if you only hint at details like knees and calf/thigh muscles through the way you shade the leg, it can go a long way in making it ...

Re: Peasants And maybe some other stuff

Technically, only antialiasing that uses semi-transparent (or semi-opaque, if you prefer) pixels aren't allowed in mainline sprites. Antialiasing without semi-transparency (i.e., using fully opaque pixels) is used to a large extent in mainline sprites, as well as in many styles of pixel art. The mai...

Re: Requesting Editor Artwork

I agree with beetlenaut; the second one definitely looks the best to me! I especially like that the tools and the tool-specific options are in such close proximity in these new mockups, as that decreases the amount of cursor movement needed to switch among the various tools and settings. Personally,...

Re: Requesting Editor Artwork

As much as the layout of #6 appeals to my photoshop workflow, I'm going to say #3, just because I don't like having the minimap squished or distorted by the map controls (it's already pretty darn small as-is). If it weren't for that, I'd have to go with #2, because the layout is really clean and wel...

Re: Piko's random art

Beware of relying too heavily on single-pixel lines to define shapes. It's always better to use shading to define the shape of an object, and then have outlines complement that. If you have any single-pixel lines, they should either be necessary for the proper shading of an object, or for the outlin...

Re: Requesting Radio Buttons

Here's a new version of my attempt, with a radiobutton-checked-pressed variation, since I've done a little more research I've come to the conclusion that the checked and unchecked variations ideally shouldn't be sharing the same image for the 'pressed' state. Also fixed a few niggles with the shape ...
