Re: Strategy, Operations, and Tactics

I'd definitely call that situation tactical. It's not so much about the number of units as it is about the time horizon and that you are in direct contact with the opponent. (Another way to look at the operational level is the movement of units when they are not in direct contact with or are due to ...

Strategy, Operations, and Tactics

This is an attempt to bring in some pieces of a theoretical framework for discussing how to play and get better at Wesnoth, based on military theory. It's not so much a set of tactical or strategical advice, but an attempt to place such advice in context. It divides the decisions one makes while pla...

Re: Heir to the Throne, scenarios 7 through 10

(Gryphon.1) Shydes, definitely. When checking my last replay, I had two shydes (one intelligent) and one enchantress (likely to have been a sylph if intelligent; I lost one sorceress in the Valley). Assuming the first one or two shamans become sorceresses, I try to develop a (preferably quick) druid...

Re: Heir to the Throne, scenarios 7 through 10

Interesting. I've followed similar patterns for several of my games. (8 Princess) I've found a single merman to be sufficient if he has the Storm Trident, but he will mainly be useful to grab a few villages and help against the trap. But yes, getting the Storm Trident to Kaba is very helpful. (9 Val...

Re: good orcs ?

My last comment here: Tolkien served as a 2nd lieutenant in the front lines of WW1 for six straight months, including the Battle of the Somme, before being invalided to England. By 1918 he had, in his own words, lost all but one of his close friends. WW2 tends to loom large today, but in many ways E...

Re: good orcs ?

In the original Tolkien setting, orcs were the evil elves. Therefore elves are the good orcs :eng: Although in Tolkien's book, being based of WWII, there are two types of orcs: communist orcs of Sauron (Stalin?) and capitalist orcs of Saruman (Hitler?) Rather, Tolkien's orcs were elves that h...

Re: Chain Lightning (Weapons Special)

Press the Attack : I was thinking of it only on your own turn (ie when attacking), but I can see arguments that it should be used when defending too. Really depends on how powerful it should be. Outflank : The way I envisioned it, Outflank would only depend on positioning (one can think of it as ev...

Re: Should the undeads to be fearless?

Another thing to add here, is that don't mistake the trait name for the game mechanic or an in-game explanation for how the trait works . The name of the trait is basically a historical label. The game mechanic is there primarily for balance reasons and unit variety. The in-game explanation could be...

Re: Chain Lightning (Weapons Special)

@Efinari: No, I don't expect any of these abilities or specials to interact with movement. I'm looking at "Press the attack" as something a little less powerful, but also less risky, than Berserker. One could of course limit the maximum number of attacks, eg the original number of attacks times two ...

Re: Chain Lightning (Weapons Special)

Here are a couple of ideas for new weapons/combat specials: "Press the attack": for every successful attack, the attacker gets to do one additional attack. Once the base attacks are exhausted, they get to attack once again for each successful attack in the previous round. Eg, say the attacker have f...

Re: good orcs ?

There are at least two books/series where orcs are the protagonists or the good guys. The first one is Grunts! by Mary Gentle. It's a very subversive look at many of the standard high fantasy tropes, with orcs as the viewpoint characters. Note that the orcs are hardly very nice, but then is hardly a...

Re: Swamplings for 1.12

Nah, Yakety Sax was entirely self-inflicted. But it fits the scenario beautifully (it's a staple of farcial chase scenes for a reason).

Re: Swamplings for 1.12

One more warning, in "Thunderstruck":

<Invalid WML found> The key 'target' is deprecated and support will be removed in version 1.13.0 (2)

I believe I saw that in some other scenarios, so it might be worth doing a search over all the scenario files.

Re: Swamplings for 1.12

Wow! Thanks for the quick turnaround. I've found some more minor issues in some scenarios: Clammie the Healer: <Invalid WML found> [object]duration=level is deprecated. Use duration=scenario instead. (2) <Invalid WML found> "invisible" follows a deprecated format for its description, usings its name...

Re: Swamplings for 1.12

Thanks for taking over and maintaining this campaign, Dugi, it's great! I've found that the Swamp Savvy trait doesn't take on units that level. They still need 3 moves in swamp, and have 30% defense. The units which received Swamp Savvy on creation (like Misris or Eeep) need 2 moves and have 50% def...
