Re: Wesnoth2, Wesnoth, Inc, and other things

I guess I can understand that artists don't want to see their work "cheapened" but at the same time, that's sort of how sharing works. If someone uses my code in a poorly engineered project that's not supposed to bother me. I definitely agree. My thoughts on the matter of licensing for ar...

Re: Wesnoth2, Wesnoth, Inc, and other things

Okay. What license do you suggest images, sounds, and so forth be licensed under? Well, it mainly depends on what your goals with the art are. I personally prefer to allow as much freedom as possible and thus license it under the CC0 or CC-BY, but you should use whatever you are comfortable with. I...

Re: Wesnoth2, Wesnoth, Inc, and other things

Wesnoth has survived for years just fine with GPL licensing and each author retaining copyright. And afaik our distributions on the apple App store were legal. It's somewhat unusual to ask people to assign copyright for work that they do for free -- that's usually only done when someone is a paid p...

Re: Hexes May Be Miles Across--But How Many?

It's more abstract than that. The scale of the maps can change within the maps themselves . There is no constant scale. A map can have a wilderness where one village represents one village, a city where one village represents one or several buildings, and a dungeon or cave where the area is roughly...

Re: Donating to Battle for Wesnoth

So wait, how does that work? You mean like, they ask you directly for permission and use it within some Anura module? Or is there some sort of open source licensing for art that I didn't see / is new. I guess so; the Frogatto website says that the art is proprietary, but that they will likely give ...

Re: Wesnoth2, Wesnoth, Inc, and other things

This is a pretty interesting development. Dave, can you expand on what this means? - Importantly, we want to clarify that while wesnoth2 is committed to being a community-driven open source effort we see the benefit of being able to have monetized distribution in some markets. The App Store, for in...

Re: Wesnoth2, Wesnoth, Inc, and other things

@Andretting Seems you love pixel art over anything else. Wesnoth must be your only haven considering that most 2D games have 3D rendered sprites. That wesnoth2 plan has shaders, that would spoil your pleasure too I guess. That's not really true; there are plenty of pixel art games out there (i.e. R...

Re: Wesnoth2, Wesnoth, Inc, and other things

Very few people can draw it well. The others have to rely on frankensteining, recolouring and small touches. This means that many art contributions are rejected for being low quality, add-ons are bashed for having lots of 'bad frankensteins', many units don't get animated because the people who've ...

Re: Wesnoth2, Wesnoth, Inc, and other things

Without 2D graphics, units can share animations, gear parts and weapons easily, saving tons of time on spritework and allowing units to have large numbers of high quality animations. Tons of work with sprites was already made for Wesnoth, you cant just put it into trash. Also I pesonally do not lik...

Re: Wesnoth2, Wesnoth, Inc, and other things

Buildings are covered in the design doc I linked. :) Oops, I missed that, sorry. Also, why are you re-implementing a game that was sometimes criticised for having 2D graphics like games in the '90s again in 2D? Why don't you stick with Blender Game Engine or something? Without 2D graphics, units ca...

Re: Wesnoth2, Wesnoth, Inc, and other things

Looking at the GitHub repository, one thing which immediately caught my attention was a data file for elvish buildings. Are buildings going to be taggable or buildable (apparently the latter since it has a hitpoints variable)?

Re: Donating to Battle for Wesnoth

I just thought i would clear a few things up: I'm not sure who wrote this but I think it is poorly written and doesn't really represent things well at all. The main reason we develop games is for fun. Battle for Wesnoth has been developed for enjoyment of the developers and people who share our tas...

You might also want to read what they write about Wesnoth here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frogatto_%26_Friends Appears that Jetrel, shadowm, marcavis, and others have edited it at various points. In contrast to their previous project, The Battle for Wesnoth, the Frogatto team did development as...

Re: Hexes May Be Miles Across--But How Many?

According to the following thread, an average Ancient or Medieval army could march 15-18 miles in 7 hours. http://historum.com/war-military-history/50719-how-many-miles-could-medieval-army-move-day.html Using that as a basis, we can calculate the size of a Wesnoth hex. One 24-hour day lasts 6 turns...
