Re: What are the worst units in the game

I'm going to assume you are talking about, least useful in a competitive 1 v 1 multiplayer game on typical mainline map pool against random opponent. (And not like, campaigns or something.) In that case I would say, worst unit is Merman hunter. Close second is, loyalist bowman. But this depends on p...

Re: Wesnoth Soundtrack

You could download them as `.ogg` here https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth/tree/master/data/core/music (or find them in your wesnoth install directory). Ogg is better than mp3 usually, but if you want to re-encode them as mp3 you probably can without making them sound bad, if you find the right progr...

There is some part of the

Re: It is possible to play Wesnoth on lower resolutions?

Man it barely works on 800 x 600. I think you won't even be able to get the top bar to fit, with the gold / village counts etc., you would have to resize all the icons probably.

Or make a custom theme with a double-high top bar... but I seriously doubt anyone has done that before.

Re: How to save Wesnoth

I realize 3D Wesnoth is kind of a 'pie in the sky' suggestion, but having that necromancers cave in the corner of the map be actually under the mountain soaring above is... Yes. I want that. So it depends on exactly what it is you are suggesting here. If what you want is like, fully 3D procedurally...

Re: How to save Wesnoth

I have an another opinion on what challenges the future of Wesnoth. The game mechanics themselves are fine and WML is just an awesome vehicle for story telling that will never get old. I fully one-hundred percent agree with this. Young people get involved in game modding (basically what UMC is) bec...

Re: Demon Tactics

Huh, that's pretty strange. They rejiggered all the terrain so that its 90 degrees rotated, which invalidates all the terrain transitions? IMO the terrain transitions are what makes the wesnoth terrain look good, idk why they didn't just make new art if they wanted to do this.

Re: [engine] Replace dismissal of recalls with hiding recall

I don't think I really have any objections to that. There's some conceivable corner cases where the player might be intended to dismiss units as some kind of a mechanic, but it seems unlikely. In any case, making the hiddenness into a unit attribute allows for the same functionality. The only small...

Re: Feedback on Wesnoth from a year's old user

(however, I don't know python, so maybe there is a reason why it's not used). FWIW as I understand we used to have python AIs built into the game. But the problem is apparently that, python is sort of "too powerful", it's hard to restrict it so that it does not have permission to access your hard d...

Re: Feedback on Wesnoth from a year's old user

I think lua is actually a much simpler and more intuitive language than WML, but the wesnoth lua bindings are somewhat poorly designed. Especially, its needlessly awkward because WML tables are not exactly compatible with lua tables (that's why the lua interface has this extra [1] [2] stuff when you...

Re: Feedback on Wesnoth from a year's old user

So I'm also in the WML is a really bad language camp. Here are some of the reasons: 1.) Reliance on macros 2.) No ability to define functions 3.) No ability to pass functions as arguments. Passing macros as arguments is not an acceptable substitute, it's not really the same thing and it makes things...

Re: How to save Wesnoth

My 2 cents: You need both. You need to test your own code when you write it. It's no one else's job to test your code. In the past some software companies would try to make a distinction between the developers and the QA team, so that some programmers would write the original code, and different pro...

Re: How long till your skills decline?

Hmm it's been a long time for me too.

In the past when I've taken a Wesbreak and came back, I wasn't really rusty, actually I think I beat Lich Lord narrowly on Elensefar Courtyard. Had a little luck though.

We could battle each other and find out if we are rusty :D

Re: RNG compensation

So, my personal opinion is that these kinds of "luck compensation" systems go against the spirit of the game, specifically, the KISS principle. One of the most important parts of the game is that the attack and damage system is simple and transparent. A lot of TBS games have extremely complex engage...
