Re: Sketching out an improved GUI2 API

Yeah, I can see that feeling a little more natural, but I'm not sure the conflict problem is solvable. (Given that there's no way for __index to distinguish between dot access and colon access.) I don't think the __call version is all that unnatural either, though. Another thing I'm wondering is to ...

Re: lua mysteries

True, true, but you still won't have the "io" module. You'd have to find a substitute.

Re: Poll: do orcs eat humans?

I wasn't suggesting they had access to large quantities, nor was I suggesting that they relied upon it for nutrition. Re: the posted studies All three of the studies I looked at (only the abstract though) clearly made out the relationship between meat and brain size / cognitive ability to be hypothe...

Re: Sketching out an improved GUI2 API

It should be called "enabled". That's what pretty much every other GUI framework calls it.

Re: Poll: do orcs eat humans?

I was aware of that deficiency, yes. But I think ancient humans likely would have had access to seaweeds (the primary non-meat source of those nutrients), though of course they probably got them mainly from meat nonetheless.

Re: Poll: do orcs eat humans?

I think you're ascribing a bit more intent to early humans than they really deserve… it's not like gathering wild plant food is hard or anything. It's probably easier than hunting to be honest. It's not something that would be random , either. They would learn where and when they can find particular...

Re: lua mysteries

I thought that only enabled the "package" module though, not "io".

Sketching out an improved GUI2 API

The existing Lua GUI2 API for custom dialogs is very procedural and not very well-designed. It was only ever intended to be temporary anyway, from what I understand, and people have kept patching it and patching it, adding new features rather than fixing the design flaws. (Every other GUI2 function ...

Re: lua mysteries

* I have searched long, also much on the lua users wiki, but there definitely seems to be nothing about directories, changing dir, knowing current dir... How to do? Is there a builtin functionality? Indeed I don't want to import a whole module, written in C like lfs, just for that! And precisely, s...

Re: Wolf advancement not happening after scenario 1

Your guess at the issue is roughly correct (though it's a little worse - it doesn't replace the trait entirely but ends up merging the loyal trait into it, which in principle could be different than actually replacing it if the trait has more [effect] tags than loyal does). Remove the [modifications...

Re: Poll: do orcs eat humans?

From research we learn high (species) intelligence implies the consumption of meat. If you can't link specific sources I'm going to assume the sources you have in mind are either poorly-conceived, badly-done, or highly-speculative; because the premise itself is highly questionable. There's no good ...

"We're talking about the species, not individuals."
Indeed, I saw that, but it didn't seem relevant in the least. I mean, the species is made up of individuals, so it's basically the same thing, right?

Re: Poll: do orcs eat humans?

How "obviously not true"? Perhaps I mistated it? Meat is more efficient and is required to support the larger, intelligent brain. Cooking increaes efficiency. We're talking about the species, not individuals. The roughly 5% of the human population who don't eat meat at all will surely be shocked to...

Re: A grand design for singleplayer mainline lore

- I don't think we need to introduce demons as a recurring evil, at least not explicitly and not before the Fall of Wesnoth part. Essentially what doofus-01 says : until then, let the Ruby of Fire be this world's Plutonium. Everyone knows that it can output tremendous power (and thus various prota/...
