Re: B.U.R.S. (Bizarre and Unusual Recruit Styles)

A BURS for the Northies would be: - Goblin Army: Only Goblin Spearmen and Wolf Riders. A casual version would allow for half-orcs like Archers and Assassins too. No full-orcs(Grunts) or non-orcs(Trolls, Nagas) are allowed. For the Loyalists: - No Armor: Only Fencers and Magi. For the Undead: - No Un...

Re: Blitzkrieg! (the value of speed in Wesnoth)

I think Drakes ought to be the best blitz-oriented faction. High mobility, high hitting power, terrain independence, tough units, and slippery Saurians. They can avoid engaging terrain-entrenched units when it's inconvenient for them and strike wherever they want. Though, technically, it can be done...

Re: Loyalist Portrait Series

Till now I was playing the game wondering why all the human mounted units had these goofy cartoonish pictures while elves, dwarves, drakes and most other humans had awesome-looking finely-detailed portraits. Then I saw this thread and understood. The Knight, Horseman and Paladin-lineart all look inc...

Re: How did you find out about Wesnoth?

I found Wesnoth through BfW's entry in the TV Tropes Wiki(http://www.tvtropes.org), which I frequent a lot. I hadn't seen any good computer-based turn-based strategy game, and I was tired of real-time strategy. Since Wesnoth was free, I decided to try it out. I've been hooked ever since. Now every t...

Re: Role of Fencers?

A very good point, being able to slide through the enemy lines and attack from 70%, but in practice you need to have all your forces and plans loaded and ready to take advantage of ANY slip in the enemy lines, otherwise the fencer will simply get slaughtered by a mage or sheer number of enemy units...

Re: Role of Fencers?

Good observation. 70% defense happens to be the maximum possible, achieved by elves in forests and dwarves on mountains. People see a unit on max defense and kind of get this subconscious hesitation, however slight. It also has the psychological effect of being a Skirmisher, which means people will ...

Re: Valley of the Trolls!

Last time I played this on 1.6.1 Medium, I went in with 2 Heroes, 2 Marksmen, 1 Ranger, 1 Druid, 1 Sorceress, 1 Lord(Erlornas) and a half-leveled Scout, not counting fresh recruits. My general Elves vs. Trolls strategy involves Slowing them with Shamans/Druids/etc. and then plinking them with ranged...

Re: The Rise of Wesnoth: Fallen Lich Point

(1) What difficulty levels and game versions have you played the scenario on? (2) How difficult did you find the scenario? (1-10) (3) How clear did you find the scenario objectives? (4) How clear and interesting did you find the dialog and storyline of the scenario? (5) What were your major challen...

Re: Worst Trait/Unit Combinatons

The unit/trait combos I dislike the most have to be: 1. The 'strong' trait on Mages, Dark Adepts, Elvish Shamans and other units which are almost entirely ranged. Though it could be useful for the long-term advancement of a DA to L3. 2. The 'quick' Trait on 6-or-8-move units. Which is why I advance ...

Re: Are archers useless?

During the first campaign I played(AoI), I used to save-load a lot. But when I went back to look at one of my replays, it looked rather ugly with my units getting good shots while the enemy got average shots - and that ruined the memorability of the mission. :annoyed: So I gave up on that. Now I loa...

Re: Tactical uses of units

If I had to classify Wesnoth units, I'd do it this way: Basic Melee: - Spearman - Elvish Fighter - Orcish Grunt - Dwarvish Fighter - Drake Fighter - Skeleton Basic Ranged: - Bowman - Elvish Archer - Orcish Archer - Dwarvish Thunderer and Poacher - Drake Burner - Skeleton Archer Scout: - Cavalryman -...

Re: "Elves are not warlike by nature..." rant (spoilers)

Sorry for raising this thread from the dead, but I've been playing 1.6.1 campaigns for about a month and lurking, and thought that there was something missing. I disagree that elves are "evil"(IMO, they're morally neutral), and I'll say that, while more warlike than drakes or woses, they are less wa...
