Probably related:
I had filed a bug (https://gna.org/bugs/index.php?17038) about "missing" Fencers in SotBE-1.

Reading your posts it looks like the AI is the cause of the loss of variation in unit recruitments.

"development release" looks like a leftover from 1.7.x.

Here are my files: ANO for Wesnoth 1.7.8 (based on ANO 1.1.6)

Note:
To reduce size of the tgz I removed the unchanged translation folder and all images but the Shadow Mage and the Orcish Shaman.

But there is still lots of work to do.
And the background of the portraits need transparancy.

Hi, I like ANO, too. So I ported ANO to Wesnoth 1.7.8 locally and it was playable, at least in the start.
