Re: Wesnoth Tips. (Team Game)

Axiom amended by Elven King: Resist the urge to attack. New players are often overwhelmed with the desire to kill the enemy. Sometimes, the best course of attack, is to hold the good ground and let your opponent do something stupid first. Choosing when to attack is one of the most difficult aspects ...

Wesnoth Tips. (Team Game)

I am drafting this because as most of you know, the vast majority of Wesnoth players don't know how to play. I hope rather than repeating myself in every game I can just send newbies to this thread. This advice is for the NEW player, to try and make the game more basic to play. The goal is to help n...

Re: How to Play Isar's Cross

Random start time is widely considered imbalanced because most maps are balanced with a dawn start time in mind. Careful work has gone into village placement and starting locations to make Wesnoth as balanced as possible. Many maps can function decently with a dusk start time, as its the exact oppo...

Re: Ladder Site Online...

The new report screen, type the first few letters, and I have autofilled the feild from the database on keypress, so once you hit in a few characters you can either select from a very short list, or type just enough to find a unique name, gal for gallifax cha for chains and then hit enter, and the r...

Re: Ladder Site Online...

The only information the ladder has is: Who won, who lost, and when they played. I will consider adding faction drop downs to the report page, and maybe a box to let players report who was "lucky". But for most of the "interesting" data you'd have to talk a wesnoth dev into building it into the wesn...

Re: Ladder Site Online...

Let me start by saying it is wonderfully encouraging to see so many ideas being posted. Keep it up. Even If I don't code them all by this release, the good ones will be added to the next release. A comment on the replay game parser, it works wonderfully, currently it prints the contents of the file ...

Re: How do I counter Ghosts with Knalgans?

Ghosts are one of the weakest undead units because they cost so much. Their only real purpose against dwarf is to kill ulfs at night. So, at night make sure your ulfs are 100% protected. If he pushes you so far backwards that your leader is within range of his adepts, then ulf his adept and stick yo...

Re: Multiplayer Competitive Era

I love the idea, but my very first thought is WAY to complex. Start with something simple. and make it happen. If you try to do something this radical all at once, you'll end up getting no where. I have also always thought Fog was too easy to "remove" Simply reducing units vision might be a great mo...

Re: Why do people quit playing?

Wesnoth has GREAT replay value is doing a LOT to improve the replay value every release. Having played Wesnoth addictively for years, I have quit many times and come back just as many times. My situation isn't the most common group, but I think there are many like me. So, here is why I come back to ...

Re: How to Play Caves of the Basilisk

To Win on Caves of the basilisk as player1, I have forgotten the player who showed me this strategy. But, llukiz I think? The Idea is to take 2 villages from player2 on the second turn of the match. This works best with Northerner as wolves move easily over hills, and have 50% defense and night bonu...

Re: How to Play Isar's Cross

Village stealing in Isars Cross. I see a lot of players stealing villages in Isars cross and I cringe. Even players with a lot of practice sometimes do it. They see an open village and they steal it. In all most every case this is a horrible idea. You never want to steal a village within range of a...

Re: The Multiplayer Map Reader's Digest

I loved the start of this thread, I loved picking over each of the changes and being able to understand why it makes the map better. It goes along way to teaching other people how to make Great maps instead of just something that can be played. Its really a shame your file hosting service doesn't le...

Re: Please contribute money to a new server infrastructure

I own part of a professional dedicated server company, and I'd be willing to donate a dedicated server at my monthly cost. Which will probably work out at about half of what you'll pay from your average hosting company. I'd give you the server for free, but I still have to pay for the electricity an...

Re: State of the multiplayer server

Perhaps you should undo the "improved ghost detection" code ? I get ping timeouts even when the server isn't full of players. It seems I am more affected by the ping timeout messages than other players... Drastically so. I get ping timed out when others aren't complaining of any connection problems ...

Re: "Specialist" AI

An AI which uses only northerner and plays the popular 1v1 maps in which it spams Grunts and tries to place them on enemy villages would be an example of a "Specific" AI that would be worth creating. It won't work well at all on say Isar's or Clash, but if you program it to village steal well (payin...
