Dwarvish Thunderers have relatively weak melee attacks, so focused melee units like Drake Clasher or Drake Fighter would stand to do well against Thunderers. Though, Wesnoth is an autocratic game, which developers are the aristocrats and clergies, while gamers like us are low leveled peasants. Basically, it's the "Rule of Cool." In a fantasy setting, exaggerating things for impressive visuals is widely accepted. Just be glad that Wesnoth tries hard to keep it under control, except for times where it's acceptable (and super strong trolls seems pretty acceptable to me ;) )

While I do think that an intermediary screen (ala HoMM) that is neutral and just says "X's turn" and you click that to actually get to the other player's turn would be a nice touch, I'm not sure how high a priority it would be to include.
