Tutorials and Easy mode

Thanks for the Wiki update - good to know. I like the idea of expanding the tutorial, but it raises the question of what should be in the tutorial and what should people have to learn by playing (on Easy)? I needed to learn to be more carful at night - but I didn't get the message until I started lo...

Re: A different new user experience

In general, I find it really hard to build up many strong units on Easy - just not enough enemies for my strategy (which is still oriented to winning with minimal losses rather than leveling-up units). As long as your units don't cost 20 gold or more each, it is entirely to your advantage to throw ...

Complicated end conditions

no. Hopefully people will notice conspicuous objects like temples... but it makes no sense that you need to kill a stoned unit to get by. Once you defeat the mages(leaders), maybe you could have an option between continuing and leaving your stoned units forever, versus staying and searching for a c...

A different new user experience

For contrast, let me describe my experience when I started. For background, I've played a certain amount of xconq, freeciv, ASC, and bos-stratagus (the beginnings of a starcraft game). Not a lot, and not multiplayer - I don't feel comfortable playing multiplayer until I feel I'm "good" at ...

Splitting further

As it stands now, it is very tempting to just read all the walkthroughs. In the interest of keeping walkthroughs for those times when you just can't figure out how to beat a level, maybe it would be nice to put each walkthrough on its own page, and then the main page can just point to all of them? I...

Very interesting...

As a programmer, I found Dave's article fascinating. I think "early gratification" is more important for games than for other software. Any game needs a certain amount of code to make it work, followed by a great deal of story, art, and music. The sooner you get the game to a point where o...

Valley of Statues story quirks

I just played Valley of Statues, 0.8.4, on Easy, and I noticed some odd things. First of all, the instructions say "Kill all enemies" but the scenario ends, to my surprise, when you kill all enemy *leaders*. (I sent some infiltrators down to wipe out the bottom arch-mage while I was still ...

Try it out...

... in another game: ASC (Advanced Strategic Command, http://www.asc-hq.org/ for Linux and Windows, also free software). They have other features I'm not too keen on (too many units to move every turn!), and it's tanks instead of elves, but they do have a totally deterministic combat system. I kind ...

Gender and translations

It was pointed out in the translaions forum that multi-gendered units pose serious problems for translators (to some languages). While in English "fighter" is acceptable for both genders, in other languages (even French) you just have to use different words (guerrier, guerriere) to avoid p...

Multiple versions of units

I like the idea of multiple versions of units (male/female, variants) but I worry about the collective maintenance effort - as a non-artist, I worry about wasting the time and effort of the artists working on Wesnoth. (Although there seem to be people willing to spend hours drawing units nobody play...

Re: Scenario Review: Elves Besieged

(1) What difficulty levels have you played the scenario on? Easy, Medium (2) How difficult did you find the scenario? (1-10) [1] 2 (easy), 3 (medium, much later) - I did it the first time I ever played Wesnoth; that's maybe a good thing. Simply recruiting a castleful of escorts and running for the ...

Re: Scenario Review: Blackwater Port

(1) What difficulty levels have you played the scenario on? Easy, Medium (2) How difficult did you find the scenario? (1-10) [1] 2 - I only figured out how to lose when I played it on Medium for the second time. (You hide in the forest til daybreak; the orc recruits zillions of archers; Sir Kaylan ...

Re: Scenario Review: Isle of Anduin

(1) What difficulty levels have you played the scenario on? Easy, Medium (2) How difficult did you find the scenario? (1-10) [1] 3, 3 - The first time through, my xconq/frecciv-adapted strategy worked just fine: collect all the villages, hold off the orc until you can build up an unstoppable force,...

1. Easy 2. 3 - I played it on my first run through the game and won it with maybe two tries. Of course, I was on easy, but I really didn't know what I was doing. I just ran for the NE orc, sending a couple of disposable units randomly off in all directions. Enough enemy troops chase them that the NW...
