This seems close enough to the AMLA part of Loti Modification. I was more worried about the $this_unit, but I now realize that this variable is automatically initialized by [modify_unit]

I think you missed the part where he wrote he would like to put it in the unit type.
You would need to change the experience=... to an [effect] IMHO.
Something like

He was most probably a necromancer to teach necromancy to the brothers and to turn into a lich. But it is indeed never said iirc.

The wiki specifically states that's only possible for an elf. I'm not aware of any example of any elven necromancer.
You should replay The South Guard then.

FTR, the bug in the first scenario has been fixed.
Elves and Dwarves will no longer attack the obelisk, you get a message if one of your unit does it, and you lose if your kill it.
