you need to create a scenario to be able to use unit button, side area and other. For use your .map as scenario : open editor save a empty map as scenario and then copy the map data from your *.map in the field : map_data="" of the empty map and then you have your map as scenario and special button ...

They are 2 bug with the map generator. 1 Its impossible to use the parametre button when you choose the 5eme type of map (tempered) 2 In 1360x768 the window for parametre of generation map is too small. bug1.png 3 the option : "Save scenario as" isnt translate.
