The PNGs were optimized already via https://github.com/wesnoth/wesnoth/blob ... optipng.py, though I don't know how that compares.

I would guess that what you're seeing in the help is the variation_name, not the variation_id. As far as I know they aren't documented anywhere, so you'd need to check the [variation]s in Corpse_Walking.cfg.

For a small number of portraits their size was not reduced at all or only by a very small amount, so they were left as .png files.

This probably would be easier to implement with a plain WML variable and then adding handling to further adjust the relevant values/settings based on the variable's value.
