1.3.x will probably be stable for x > 10 and some values in between. But no gurantees, maybe we go up to 1.3.42 before starting 1.4 or only to 1.3.7. Who knows? It's all in the future. :D Perhaps we should also point out that this value depends on people actually playing 1.3.x. The more play it get...

Sounds like a lot of work.

How will you know they're back on with a new IP?

1.3.1 will never be stable.

Not when you've got a dodgy connection and this is the third time you've rejoined a 40-turn game you started with your friends!

The crash killed my post, so I will summarise: To calculate the proportion of games that are decided by luck, imagine two perfect computers (equal opponents) playing each other. Say they are playing the same faction and the maps are perfectly balanced. How many of their games would be decided before...

Playing it on 1.2.2 on Medium. How are we supposed to beat Into the Land of the Dead? I managed to kill the enemy leader, but nothing happened, and the signpost is surrounded by dozens of skeletons. No way can a Mage Commander get through there. All of the ghosts and helpers suicide themselves on fr...

Indeed, Noy, and that fits into the model perfectly: If you evaluate the chances of you getting a higher than 51% shot on their leader later down the line as very likely, you are making a skill judgment. On the other hand, if you take the 51%, it is equivalent to saying, "This is my best shot o...

I really think that the time for theory and speculative conversation is over. As awry as it went in waterd103's thread, I think it should be possible to test how randomness effects games and to which degree game are lost solely due to RNG. I don't agree with Imp's suggestion that it's impossible to...

The motivation behind this idea seems very suspect. Beginners who cannot play drakes always have the option of choosing their own, non-drake faction. if you shelter beginners from the game, they will never learn. It's like playing chess without knights because beginners generally have a lot of probl...

Loyalists are also one of the most awesome factions. There are so many ways to play them and their strategies usually come easily and naturally. There's a reason why Loyalists are the default faction in the default campaign. ^_^ I think HttT is the quintessential Battle for Wesnoth campaign, and th...

If fear of luck causes players to play poorly, other players without such a fear will outperform them. Wanting to improve, the fearful players will follow the lead. Soliton has a fairly aggressive playing style, although he does occasionally make poor attacking decisions - that might influence other...

Wesnoth Game Theory

I like devising theory for games. It's fun. For me, taking the game down to a science - is very satisfying. I've developed a fair bit for Wesnoth, so I'll post it bit by bit. Some people are probably sick of hearing me talk about it by now, so I'll post it here on the forums for others to enjoy and ...

Loyalists are not cheap. They are about average cost. Loyalists are also one of the most awesome factions. There are so many ways to play them and their strategies usually come easily and naturally. In the newer releases (1.3.1 onwards), the starting time of day changes. In the prior releases, the d...

This sorta tacks on to Kollle's points and Doc's earlier comments. Between Kollle and I we've probably played the Drake Knalgan match-up over a dozen times over the past several months. Some experts are up to thousands of matches played or observed. When we say its balanced, its probably because we...
