Re: LordBob's commissionned work
These portraits all look great. The only slightly off thing about the ogres, it seems to me, is that they look really *clean*, like they live someplace easy and just stepped out of the shower. Being a bit scraped up, with some dirt, scars, scabs, etc. would go a long way to making them look more unp...

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
If you’re going to design a font or even just a logotype and you want it to work well, I really would recommend starting a discussion about it at typophile. You’ll get much better critique there than you will here (no offense to kitty et al – for real, the guys and gals over there know their stuff)....

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
You’re right, it’s possible to read text in a color scheme with *some* value contrast (from the scheme you drew from Monet’s painting the CIELAB lightnesses of the background and foreground are respectively 48 and 57). (see image) use3870-gray.png If you get rid of the value contrast altogether thou...

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
Heavy weight and strong stress are hallmarks of blackletter fonts, as is limited negative space. The font has already been stripped of lot of interesting detail to make it more legible, it is about as simple and streamlined as it can to still pass as a blackletter. Reducing the weight would risk lo...

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
The problem here is that there is not enough distinction between positive and negative space in the text, or between the letter shapes and the texture inside and around them. Both the letters themselves and the background are visually busy and made up of a mix of values from medium-light to medium-d...

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
I’m really not kidding about asking for advice at typophile (I’d make a post there myself, but that *would* be presumptuous). I think the overall concept for the letters is fine, but I’d guess the advice of the experts over there could make a dramatic improvement. I’m not really a member of that com...

Re: The new Wesnoth logo and the Loyalist sigil
Hopefully it’s not presumptuous of me to say that I think the current logotype letter shapes need a lot of work. In particular, the apparent x height is inconsistent, and the “texture” (density of positive vs. negative space) varies quite a bit from letter to letter. Parts are pretty cramped seeming...

I just replayed HttT using the silver mage strategy. ... The best was on Test of the Clan. I defeated all four leaders on turn 23. I guess you captured a village near a leader,go out of it and let the silver mages pop up? Yes, that's the idea. I got extremely lucky on the last leader, who ca...

Valley of the Dead is so much easier with 3 or 4 silver mages. Stategy: send a few horses/knights north and south to grab villiages near the enemy liches. Send a bunch of new fighters w. shamans after them to delay enemy baddies. Make straight for the walking corpses with the main force. With this s...

Tcoloring is a bad idea for portraits. Instead, a separate layer with an alpha channel should be used for portions which change color. These could be made magenta, and then hue shifted to the appropriate color. But in portraits, unlike in tiny unit art, magenta hues might be necessary for non-tcolor...
