Names of magi (brainstorming)

Post by UngeheuerLich »

I read in the developer area, that maybe new names for magi are needed (i thought so, too)

my proposal:

Apprentice - Fire walker - Mage of fire - Archmage

------------------------------ Shadow walker

--------- ---- Holy man - Mage of light

-: -: Mage of Time
-: Cleric: Cleric of Light

JW's proposal sounds neat. Does "Cleric" violate NRIW though?

I also thought about mage of time (and space) but thought is was too long ;)

I like your names for the mage branches, JW

lets take those ;)

if cleric is not ok (whatever NRIW is... no reality in wesnoth?), use

priest --> priest of light

I still like JW´s names!

the only debatable is mage of time... but I like it... warp mage sound too much like star wars...

apprentice, wizard, mage archmage is not bad, but difficult to tell if mage or wizard is higher in the order...

but why not

I am assuming it is "No Religion in Wesnoth"

But what about that "Holy" thing? Should we change it to "Perl"?

If you don't like mage of time or warpmage then how about Warlock. The whole holy thing is kind of strange if there is not religion...

'Warlock' means a male witch, which* generally implies either fairy-tale 'black magic' (AKA the Dark Adept line) or just another religion (mine, but that's not relevant).

If religion is excluded from Wesnoth, you obviously don't want references to either paganism or Wicca (yes, there is a difference). But the other interpretation isn't really what you want either, since (to most people) 'witchcraft' is what 'evil' people do.

That's not the way I've seen Warlock used most frequently. The way I've most frequently seen it used it refers to a magician who messes around with reality. Of course I may be reading from several weird series then because I don't think of whichcraft as being magic done by evil people.

I thought that the religious type didn't use the term "warlock" because it meant "oathbreaker", and called their members "witch" regardless of sex?

Those are pretty good.

Now to replace Cleric... If no religion should be implied, and we aren't gonna change "holy", then it's gonna be hard to find something.

For "Mage of Time":
-Time Traveler? Plane Crosser? :P
-Illusionist? (not sure about that one)

For "Cleric": Diviner, but that still has religious reference :?

Well anyway, they also heal. I've never imaged a master of the arcanes could actually heal someone.

avoid "of". it sounds really clumsy. Tho personally, i find silver mage very fitting. After all, it did remain silver-colored.

Code: Select all

                           -> Silver Mage
Apprentice -> Fire Mage -> Higher Mage -> Archmage
            -> White Mage -> Celestial Mage
