Mountain pass - run or fight?

What do most people do in the Mountain Pass? Do you follow the pass or do you attack the mages head on? I used to do the first but now I usually do the latter. I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts if one is better than the other.

If you can keep the dwarf beserkers alive, it's just too easy for them to destroy the mages.

I do like the new bridge, so that it's possible to go around. In the early versions, you had to pass both wizards' keeps and killing them was the best plan.

I usually recruit gryphons and send them to fetch the Berserkers. The Berserkers take down the first mage and the Gryphons the second.

Eh.. attack. I guess it isn't necessary to kill either but it makes no sense not to take out the first one. It's probably easier to avoid the other one, though.

after you've killed the first one, it becomes much easier to kill the second. If you kill the first, you should definitely go for the second.

I use to send the berserkers in the mountain to kill the mage and surely defeat him,with some gryphons.
