So Many Questions About Wesnoth Development from a Noobie

Hello everyone,

I have enjoyed Wesnoth off and on for years now, and I recently got hit with another surge of inspiration. I am very keen to make a video game that is hexagonal, and I've always found Wesnoth artwork to be very desirable. I am just now beginning to learn the basics of game development, and so I anticipate I have a long road ahead of myself. That being said, there is so much I'd like to understand about this game so that I can use that knowledge to make my own game. First of all, how the heck do these hexagonal grids work so well together? How do you design a system where everything interacts so well together, both in terms of the underlying coding/stats and also the artwork? How do you design tiles to fit so nicely together, in order that they exhibit smooth transitioning between environments? I have a hundred more questions, but I'll leave it at that for now.
