Troll spam, maybe + assasins to poison them as they have marksman- just remember to protect them with troll whelps. Ignore grunts as they will probably get skewered to death- same for archers and wolf riders.

How can I protect heavily wounded units ? Zone of control is useless......

Well watching your replay it was close, 36 units lost vs 32 killed and you got unlucky too so... Nothing wrong with grunt spam, what you should have done is form some lines so you couldn't be swarmed from all directions as it happened on some rounds. Also you fought some fights on unfavorable TOD, retreat a little and wait for a better time.

Thank you for your suggestions. But how can grunts catch up with fencers who have better movement when they retreat...

Maybe you can hunt with nagas or wolves then, just a few to get retreating fencers (2 wolves or 2 nagas for example). Nagas are especially good since they have a lot of hits to counter the fancer high defense (in your replay you kill a few fencers using nagas). So my suggestion is wolf to a map without water and definitely a naga or two if the map has water.

Nagas are good to hunt heavily wounded units, but sometimes they have to hunt on land . Though wolves are necessary, I don't think wolves are so good. Wolves' cost performance is bad. 17 gold is expensive, 5×3 damage points is small......
