Wesnoth Performance

Post by Dave »

As of version 0.8.10, if you run Wesnoth with the command line parameter --fps it'll display the number of frames per second it's running at in the top-left of the screen.

This thread is to gather feedback on the kind of performance people are getting with Wesnoth.

I'd appreciate it if users could run Wesnoth using the --fps switch, try opening a typical scenario like "The Elves Besieged", and scroll around the map a little. It might be a little slower the first time you scroll around the map, as it loads images, but then the frames per second should remain relatively stable.

Please post a reply to this thread stating what your frames per second are, and what kind of system you're running, and what resolution you're running Wesnoth at. You might also like to try moving a unit and see the fps you get while the unit is moving and post that.

As an example, my settings are:

Windows XP, 2 Ghz processor
NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 video card
resolution of 1152x864
scrolls around the map at 21-22 fps
units move at 48 fps

If you have trouble or don't understand how to use command line parameters, please do NOT post in this thread. Post your questions in a new thread, so as to not pollute this thread.

Debian Linux (testing) using "unstable" wesnoth (0.8.10), 900Mhz processor
Matrox G400 Videocard (Xfree 4.3.0.1)
Resolution of 1024x768 at 16 bit depth
Scrolling around the screen with nothing selected: 12fps
Scrolling around the screen with a unit seleted: 5-9fps
While a unit is moving: 35-40fps
While updating displayed zone of possible moves: 18-20fps

(Sorry not to follow the same format, but on the first I wasn't sure, and thought it might be useful to know the last.)

BeOS r5.03 Pro, Wesnoth 0.8.10, 1,4Mhz processor
Creative 3D Blaster nVidia 2MX 32MB DDDR,
512MB DDR RAM,
Resolution of 1024x768 at 32 bit depth
Scrolling around the screen: 18-22fps
While a unit is moving: ~49fps
While a unit is moving+screen auto scrolled (in intro of scenario, "jumping" way, not smooth scroll): ~39fps
While updating displayed zone of possible moves: ~44fps

All above tested on screen with small (3-6) number units, without accelerated speed.

With accelerated speed fps at intro of scenario was ~99, and ~89 while unit was auto moved with auto scroll of screen ("jumping" screen way, not scrolled smoothly).

Linux, 600MHz processor
onboard NeoMagic graphics
resolution of 1024x768, windowed to 1021x715
scrolls around the map at 9-18 fps
units move at 19-28 fps (accelerated mode enabled)

This is a debug build of 0.8.10+cvs, built with -O0, and running with

Code: Select all

--fps -d --log-error="all" --log-warning="all" --log-info="all" > /tmp/wesnoth.log.$$
but still quite acceptable overall.

2600+ AthlonXP
MemTotal:1035476 kB

Move units: ~(48 - 50) fps
Scroll screen: ~(21 - 26) fps

Is the framerate limited to 50?
Only one person here claims to have exceeded it.
Bear, as in Fozzy,Bare, as in Arms,Beer, as in Free.

The frame rate is limited to 50, except when moving units and the game is in accelerated mode, in which case it's limited to 100.
