Skyships

Post by Wussel »

Is there anybody interested in fantasy style Skyships? Might be a bit difficult given that we still have lots of room for improvement for regular ships.

Personally I favor ships like Joe Dever's Skydancer. Basically a ship with some means of levitation and mostlikely wind control. Joe Dever was talking about reverse magnetism in therms of lifting force.

There is nothing wrong with steampunk zeppelins. I just do not like them in fantasy settings.

There was a fantasy movie with an awesome skyship. I can only remember that the captain was extremly concerned about his reputation. "Takes a lifespan to built and only minute to destroy" is a typical quote from the movie.

About the skyships: I would asume wooden built with ship like hull. Reason would be waterlanding and technical constrains. Sails would focus an wind coming straight from behind. That would make sailing quite smoth and allows open decks. Basically if the levitation device breaks ships could still be superior surface vessels.

Source of magic could be mages, scrolls and crystals? Mages have to sleep, scrolls wear off, only crystals last indefenite. Maybe the first are good in case of emergencies for extra boost or crash landings and such?

It is hard to find concepts and art for this topic. Please share what you have and what you would find usefull for Wesnoth.

I think I have seen that. It looks like something is missing on the left.

It does look like a Zeppelin design to me. There are ballons with some dwarfs in an addon too, I believe. I am really considering Skyships more in the shape of flying boats than Zeppelins (airships).

Anyway I am looking more in terms of a brainstorming of what would fit with fantasy and Wesnoth.

The movie was Stardust (2007) and the Captain "Shakespeare" was Robert de Niro. Ship was called "Caspartine". It follows a Zeppelin design but has a relative small bag design.

Here is a picture of the skyrider as tabletop model. It was hard to find.

A discussion about the Skyrider crew (all dwarves).

And a silly discussion about Skyrider/Skydancer being bigger from the inside. It is compared with "Bag of Holding". For the records: The captain's quarter of the Caspertine was huge from the inside, too.

This link about tropes is good reading too.

In Deathgate Cycle by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman they used sail-ships to fly through the sky. But they didn't make drawings of that I'm afraid (at least they are not easily to be found ^^). If you look for some inspiration just look up "Skyship" on google pictures. That features some really nice designs.

There are also some nice drawings on pintrest.

H. G. Wells had some nice ideas for skyships too, as well as Hayao Miyazaki in his films. However these are maybe a little to steampunk.

I finally found a design using Crystals! 4 blue for lift and 8 red for speed? It is made for a WoW Gild and is copyrighted.

I came up with a simple design. Still save for landing on water. So far b/w only.

And without background:

This size is good for 2 tiles or even one if you place it in the middle. I woud take that size as embellishment (Like move to the airship). But in could be used for a unit too. It could be used as a castle with 2 tiles, if that what is required.

I would give that ship a crew of 3 and 5 Passenger. Human size without horses.

I have different sizes like 96 (big on one tile, could be a unit in a mixed battle), 72 (could go on a largescale map with only ships). 72max (just squezed it in our beloved canvas size). Very nice ist 360! It is real size compared to the units. It would go perfectly as castle with 3 tiles in a row.

could you also post a full size crewless version? we could make a competition here: who makes the most interesting/funniest crew, how about that?

If anybody needs 72max, please ask. Other wise these numbers above are up to scale:

360p 100% for 3 tiles
144p 40% for 1 tile (huge) or 2 tiles
96p 26,6% for 1 tile (large)
72p 20% for 1 tile (small)
