Zoomo's Art

Post by Zoomo »

Hello everyone, I was looking at the peasant sprites and found that the had an incredibly high colour count. So as practice I tried to reduce the colour count and in the process tweaked them a bit (please note that I understand that all the current base frames are considered final, Which is why this is posted in art workshop.) I also may post other sprites I work on in the future.
so here they are, feedback is greatly appreciated.

(non-artist)

Is it just me or are a lot of the edges jagged and in need of some anti-aliasing?

Huh, I thought antialiasing was generally not used in wesnoth standing sprites. Could you point out the jaggy edges?

Technically, only antialiasing that uses semi-transparent (or semi-opaque, if you prefer) pixels aren't allowed in mainline sprites. Antialiasing without semi-transparency (i.e., using fully opaque pixels) is used to a large extent in mainline sprites, as well as in many styles of pixel art.

The main problem I see with the revisions is that they the palettes currently have very high contrast, which is most likely one of the main contributors to the 'jaggies'. Particularly since we're dealing with cloth and skin, both of which are relatively low-contrast materials, I'd tone down the contrast and see if that helps. Also, be wary of outlines that are too thick (usually more 1 pixel thick for standard mainline sprites), since that can also give a more jagged look to the edges of a shape.

If you want to work on peasants it would be (I imagine anyway heh) celebrated in the UMC community if you created some more variety in their ranks. Wesnoth could more common folk!

I'm seeing them on the peasant and ruffian's right (our left) arms, as well as on all of the weapons. Again, I'm not an artist, so please take my comments with a grain of salt- I'm quite possibly completely wrong about the anti-aliasing business and that isn't the solution that's needed.

Heres an updated peasant.

I'd love to do some umc peasants, any suggestions?

I have a feeling that generic female villager sprites would be useful, particularly in RPG-ish UMCs having towns with citizens in them. Or maybe just more variations on the basic villager concept in general, i.e. more types/variations of peasants, such as a blacksmith, a tailor, etc.

A fishwife! Maybe just some regular people, or more slightly shady folks. A merchant, a mayor, a beggar, an innkeeper, an old farmer. Heck I may even make some- could be fun :geek:

A wild beggar appears!

Does anyone else think he needs stubble or a beard or something? I just decided to leave him clean shaven but I think it might work better

I did a female woodswoman ages ago. There are also some others in the beginning of my art thread.
