Wow, 15 posts in less than 15 minutes. I think that's a record for one of my threads.

And one more thing you guys should probably know about me before you call my words BS... I'm somewhat of a hacker myself (though I don't like that term, since most of the hacking I do is local and to friends and colleagues), being able to hack into computers (my friends' for fun and games, not rip and rash on strangers' for fun). I've been able to hack just about anything I needed (once forgot my email password once. And this forum's password. And some other stuff :lol2: ) I just wanted people to know that "hardcore" hackers are out there (the White and Grey hats of the world) and given the right info, it's pretty freakin easy.

GMA...how can you be a "hacker" when you don't even know what 127.0.0.1 is?
99 little bugs in the code, 99 little bugs
take one down, patch it around
-2,147,483,648 little bugs in the code

@GMA: Yeah, but this is the Wesnoth forums. I can't see why anyone would want to hack one of us. To see the progress on our add-ons? No. Maybe a mod, or an admin, or dev or something that.

Haha I do know what it is. Had a long day, so I felt as if I needed to create some chaos on myself :lol2: . Oh, fun fun.
Well, anyhow, I do also have a Linux computer, a Linux PS3 (took forever), a Win 7, an XP with Win 7 mods, and a Mac. Also got a Jailbroken iPod (you wouldn't believe how much that helped me. Took forever to mod the code to make it my own). Well, that's all I gots to say. Have fun all!

@uncleshelby: there's somebody for everything :D Trust me. I know some

If you've got an insecure system, you've got an insecure system. Security by obfuscation doesn't work.

Yes, a good hacker can hack anything. A good hacker also has better things to hack than home users. 99% of people who have been "hacked" were actually script kiddied. (I swear, I'm going to kill the next person who tells me their Facebook account was hacked - no it wasn't, you clicked on random [censored] that you didn't know what it was, that pointed to a site you've never heard of, from somebody you don't know, in a copy paste replication of the last 300 times you account got "hacked" :augh: )

Linux + noscript + sensible user = near immunity to script kiddies who'll just go after an easier target instead.

I will bug shadowmaster every second of every day for the rest of 2011 to give an awesome custom title and color to the first "hardcore" "whitehat" to "hack" me:

Code: Select all

derek@fran-ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux fran-ubuntu 2.6.38-11-generic #50-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 12 21:17:25 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
My current IP address is 184.5.186.26 and my router is a Zyxel P-660HW-D1 v2

Surely given all that amazingly useful information I can expect to see a text file with your forum username in /home/derek/ by midnight eastern standard time.

Ahh! What happened to Gambit's post? Am I going insane?

Said that, I am using Debian testing on my laptop and Debian squeeze on my workplace desktop machine. And if the hackers would care, the wesnoth server is running Debian squeeze too. Oh - actually, the hackers _do_ care, because they hack on wesnoth itself, I forgot.

Besides, not stating what you are using doesn't gain you any security at all. Security through Obscurity just doesn't work. It might keep self-claiming hackers (aka script kiddies) out because they don't get it, but if someone is willing to crack into your system, not telling them what you are using won't buy you any security. It will buy you only one thing: a few seconds more time to pull out your cable before they figured what you are using.

Enjoy,
Rhonda

I'm using Ubuntu. (Since XP is evil).
And my root password is:

Because it's easy to remember.
TIP: ...After posting here, wait till someone leaves you a textfile on desktop named:

I can totally see that happen.
