Wesnoth freezes at launch - Mac 10.6.x - Wesnoth 1.8.x

Operating system: Currently - 10.7.1, have attempted when the OS was 10.6.6
Wesnoth version - Any 1.8 version; dev (1.9.9) is not affected.
Language: English
Problem: When Wesnoth is launched, the screen fades to black, then the desktop reappears. After a little time, if you open the Force Quit menu, Wesnoth is listed as "Not Responding".
No backtrace log files are listed in the /Library/Logs/CrashReporter for the dates or times that this occurs.
Attempted to clear the settings files:

I can start Wesnoth 1.9.9 without issues.
Note: I ran Wesnoth 1.8.5 without any issues for some time on OSX 10.6.6, then, one day it started freezing at launch.
Any suggestions?

For Lion: Wesnoth currently does not run in full screen under Lion.

Thank you so much. I couldn't find this thread anywhere; I searched under a variety of words, but never found this. After switching it out of fullscreen, it is working properly now. Again, thank you.
