Greatest Retro Games Ever

Post by Great_Mage_Atari »

What are everybody's favorite retro games? Ya know, the cartridge games that we all dust off every once in a while on a Tuesday night and play til we get the nostalgia effect, the good old days when games were games and computers were computer, not one-in-the-same.

My Favorites-
NES- Guardian Legend
Master System- Sonic the Hedgehog
Genesis- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
SNES- Super Mario World

18 years is retro, but 14 isn't?

Where are we drawing this arbitrary line?

Dude, retro is 8 to 16 bit, with the exception of some 64 and 32 bits

Fallout was DOS, and still results in /thread, though I suppose Fallout 2 is just disqualified.

I'm not sure hardware requirements are the best way to define retro, but it's your thread.

@GreatMageAtari: If line is 8 and 16 bit, then I'd say you better change title to avoid confusion and/or flame.

NES: Duck Hunt... Just kidding. :P

Super Contra. (or Super C, or under what name you know it... I don't care.)
IMO, one of best run'n'guns ever, and difficulty was (In My Opinion, again) perfectly balanced.

But if we are talking "newer" games, then first Discworld point'n'click.

@averyimaginativename: 4 years are AGE in video games industry. Compare graphics from upcoming Battlefield 3 to graphics from Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. Difference is VERY visible.
EDIT: Or to tell the truth, maybe was not so visible back then. Oh, well.

But Duke Nukem 3D was a 32-bit protected mode DOS game! :P
Actually, I’m only sure about the protected mode part, but that seems to be the distinguishing trait between “16-bit” and “32-bit” software in the Intel 80386 and later platforms with the same basic architecture.

Agreed, Kirby super star was pure win :) I'm also a big fan of Final Fantasy 6, Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana. Some of the first video games I played :)

I tryed to resist, but I gotta say it... I bought my SNES back in the days bundled with the original Street Fighter 2. Many hours of fun and/or frustration.

I also owned a Sega Master System2 but I can't say I remember any games to be good there (Sonic, well...), except, which was kinda sweet, that a game was hardcoded to the system so you could play "Alex Kid in Miracle world" without a cartride in the system.
