New villages icon?

Post by JAP »

In my opinion the old icon is a bit of an eyesore among otherwise nice icons.
How about this for an improvement?

I don't see any problems with an elf-woman hitting somebody with a mace...

Executive decision, since this sort of thing is so borderline and subject to bikeshedding:

It looks good, and I think we ought to use it. The perspective on the previous house meshed poorly with the pixel grid; at that size, there just wasn't a good way to make it look crisp without changing the perspective. This besides is just more iconic; sometimes perspective on something so tiny is a moderately bad idea.

I'll commit it tomorrow - the wesnoth community could help me by researching any areas in trunk where this icon appears besides just the single gui image villages.png. This would be really helpful, because that step alone turns an otherwise 2minute commit into an awkward 20+minute putz job.

It's probably a good idea to change the favicon too when the icon is no more used ingame.
The new icon could be used, but I actually would suggest a small version of the Wesnoth shield.
Not sure if that was discussed already in earlier times though...

Thanks, there’s also capture.png and some buttons that used the same image.
Here you go.

Heh. My first thought was the same as everyone else's "looks great!" But my second though was that a lot is lost in simplifying the perspective. I feel like the money and population icons have nice and dynamic perspectives, and while very clean and colourful, the new one comes off as kind of flat.

Of course that's just my uninformed immediate reaction, likely polluted by knee jerk negativity to change. And I guess if its not possible to clean up the old one, then there's no question which one should be used.

Just my 2 pesos.

Theres just one thing, its an icon, not a poster, or portrait or sprite. Icons don't need dynamic perspectives or colours to work. The main purpose of icons is that you look at them, and know what it is at a glance. And this new one does it better than the old one.
My spritework can be seen here.

My main issue is that it's all drab shades of brown, whereas all the other icons are brightly coloured. I don't think it stands out quite as well as the other icons because of that.

I agree, that the new one looks better in game.
Still, the site icon was somewhat... iconic.

Congrats to JAP - the new icon's a vast improvement.

Split a lot of technically-oriented remarks to Website — here’s the new topic. We don’t really need to be discussing web browsers and caching in Art Contributions.
