Give me a project(s)

Post by Crow_T »

Hey everyone, I'm interested in making some portraits, and am trying to unravel the web of what's done and who is working on what- is there anything that just needs to be done? If the admins/directors want to say "Here, do this" I'm down. :geek:

I'm interested in doing character design, and would like to be able to adapt to different styles for different projects. Plus I'm a D&D guy from way back ;)

There's a few generic units, mostly monsters, which don't have a portrait yet. Cuttle Fish, Fire Guardian (only in 1.9.x), Sea Serpent (has an older, smaller portrait), Giant Rat, Giant Scorpion (has an older portrait, originally taken from someplace else), Giant Spider, Tentacle of the Deep and Yeti.

If you're comfortable with doing monster units like that, then I think you could just pick any of the abovementioned. On the other hand, if you want to do portraits for the main humanoid races then I guess I'll leave the suggestions for the art directors...

EDIT: And remember to check the the technical requirements for portraits.

Most of our core speaking units have their generic portraits done at this point, after a very successful few years. I have one more portrait on my list, which I'm working on at the moment.

Similarly, we've made great progress on campaigns, so the normal areas I'd suggest for a new portrait artist have slim pickings at the moment.

So what I'll suggest is that you might like to try out on alternate portraits for commonly-used units - the level 1s that are most frequently recruited, spearman, elvish fighter etc.

So yeah, pick a monster or a level one unit and show us what you can do with it, then we'll see how we go from there. The key things are matching the canon style as closely as you can (just look at pretty much any portrait these days, the newer the better), and matching the technical requirements.

most generic units don't have female portraits - all loyalists other than mages, all dwarves (assuming we don't go with Terry Pratchett - style of viewing dwarven females), the ghouls and ghasts could use not to use the same portrait for both of them, same for woses

Only units that have female sprites need female portraits, and all of those are covered. We're not planning on more.

Please, once again, do not talk about stuff you don't know.

That being said: Woses and necrophages are two units which do lack portraits at present.

oops, sorry, I did pick the wrong examples(good intentions - they pave the road to hell and I get carried away with them) ..well..nagas however have male/female differentiation..technically, not visually..don't know if that should count since reptiles don't differ that much between genders

after looking through a bit more - lv3 elven archers also use the same portraits as their lv2 counterparts

actually why am I writing this..wasn't there a list somewhere?

I believe jetrel had plans for that, but for now they're identical.

That happens a lot, see the maroon parts on the list. (parts of it are quite outdated though)

Most units do indeed share one portrait over at least two levels. And this is something that is not considered a problem. If people wanted to work on filling in the gaps, that would be welcomed, however.

I ought to append the following for your reference, too:

I'll give you a quick tour of our Art Community so you don't get lost.

Basically our forums are built around forum titles ( written under the people names, as you can see with my own)

* No title (or not an art-related title)
Did nothing with regard to art.
* Art Contributors
These people have contributed artwork to the mainline game.
* Art Developers
The "art staff", who have the power to add artwork to the mainline game, and can generally be relied upon for good critique.
* Portrait Directors (kitty and LordBob)
Give the go/no-go to portrait contributions
* Terrain Art Director (eleazar)
Gives the go/no-go for terrain art contributions
* (Deputy) Art Director (Jetrel, thespaceinvader)
Give the go/no-go to contributions in general

It is important for you to understand this distinction, because people with no art knowledge may not give comment and critique as well as people with art knowledge. If you disagree with a comment from someone with no title, just don't follow the advice.

You should consider comments from art contributors and art developers as comments coming from knowledgeable people, and worth considering... Of course, your art is yours and you are free to not follow the advice, but you should consider them. One thing to be aware of is that this forum is dedicated to getting artwork ready for the mainline game. We treat your work realistically - we're not going to praise it just because you posted it here. Please don't take offense at suggestions to improve your work - if you're looking for blind praise, you're in the wrong place.

Jetrel, kitty, and the Art Developers usually have very clear comments which tell if a change is needed to get something into mainline or just a suggestion to improve. These people will have the final say on whether something goes into the mainline game or not.

If you try to do a portrait for a specific character (from a campaign for example) you should try to contact the campaign author or maintainer(s) first and try to post your linework as soon as possible (even if it's just a scanned sheet of paper) — this is because the original author might have a particular "vision" on his character and having early feedback will usually be good for everybody

The part about submiting your work "early and often" is a good advice even if you are not drawing a campaign character, by the way....

Now the forums...

We have three art related forums:

* Art contributions is for pieces of art intended for mainline
* Art workshop is for pieces for user made content, and for users who are posting for critique to help to develop their skills.
* Art development is limited to people with an art title. Some artists don't like having their work openly criticized by the less knowledgeable members of the audience, and post there instead of the open forums.

One last point...

All wesnoth contributions must be made available under the terms of the GNU General Public License.

Thanks for your candor, it's appreciated- one of the reasons I want to get on board is because this looks like a really good project (active, well made), and I understand the people involved have certain standards. If you don't like my work, I'll just add it to my own portfolio! No wucking furries as the Aussies would say.

I don't know how to actually make something GPL'ed. Do I add a readme with the file or something?

It being released with the game would do it, as and when you get to that stage. Otherwise, a simple declaration accompanying the piece is sufficient, I believe.

Is there a sprite for the fire guardian anywhere? I'm checking here http://units.wesnoth.org/1.8/C/mainline.html but there's a lot to go through.
