Stilt-houses replacement

Post by lurker »

Hello,

Experimenting with houses for a poorer variant for the (UMC) city terrain, I think I found a design which could be suitable as a replacement for the outdated swamp-water villages (If nothing else the current ones are much too small). Since it is undesirable to use a similar design twice for different purposes, I thought I'd ask whether you are interested. More specifically, I propose to replace this:

with this:

If accepted I am fully prepared to make some variants also.

Thanks

Lurker

The old one makes me think "Stilt house!" before the second one does. I think the second one looks less like a house on stilts and more like a submerged two-storey house, until I see the holes between the stilts, possibly because there's no quickly visible platform.

More of a "deck" might be nice, but it looks good to me.

I have to say that visually, albeit not design-wise, I prefer the old ones. Unless you're planning on roughing this up a bit, it looks a little plasticky to me. Otherwise, I think it looks good.

In my case the functioning version makes me think 'village' with the new one being more a ' single house'
I'd say if you make some corrections like tsi mentionned then it could be used as a variation, not a replacement

Rouher roof (the one on the right), the rest unchanged. Better?

I think I will also exend the deck on the right side

Edit: Here it is

Maybe the platform/deck would be clearer without the railing. Not so much as a way to go around the house, but as a boarding point for boats and such.

I think this house could be used above water as well as above swamp.

That does look better, yeah, but I'd be a bit more comfortable with a similar treatment across the whole piece. It just doesn't quite look organic at the moment, particularly not like something that's been there for years in a mucky, damp swamp.

The swamp grass doesn't seem to poke up in front of the stilts, which makes it look a little pasted on. I'm assuming that's just because it's WIP, but I thought I should mention it so it doesn't get forgotten.

Also, I like the design, though I agree that removing the railing at the front and roughening it up a bit might be a good idea.

Progress:

- Fewer railings (but I wanted to keep some :-) )
- Desaturated and roughed up walls

Is it just me or is the bottom part of the platform at a different angle to the hut?

No, it isn't, it is created out of the same building blocks. But it indeed looks a bit twisted - probably an artefact of the noise filter. If necessary I can push some pixels to straighten that out.

:-) Hope, Eleazar agrees. Here is the promised second variant. I think I will go into the race with these two, so the images are attached, too.

The platform on both models reads as a series of holes, most likely because you've picked such a dark tone against the already dark swamp. A ligther, sllightly bleached material would help.
Also, isn't this a blatant example of creeping biggerism ? I don't know what it looks like next to other villages, but it's definitely bigger than the former swamp house. :hmm:
