Wesnoth RCX: visual team-coloring/recoloring tool [0.2.1]

Post by shadowm » October 16th, 2010, 3:34 am

Wesnoth RCX (codename Morning Star) is a Qt-based GUI application for recoloring Wesnoth graphics using the game’s own team coloring mechanism.

Derived from the Wesnoth-TC codebase, Wesnoth RCX is intended as an aid for Wesnoth sprite artists and campaign developers who need to preview their unit artwork as it will be displayed in-game under various team coloring parameters. It provides a quick preview functionality, as well as the option to save the results to disk for other purposes. A built-in visual palette and color range editor allows artists and coders to play around with the various possibilities offered by Wesnoth’s team coloring and generate WML code for use in add-ons.

Wesnoth RCX is open-source software, released under the terms of the GNU General Public License, version 2 or any later version.

The current released version is 0.2.1. Source code and binary packages for Windows and Mac OS X are provided in the project’s information page and the latest blog post with the current release announcement, linked below.

May I post as average Joe?

I like the idea. I would like the sprite displayed bigger by factor 2. 72x72=> 144x144.

Please make sure bigger sprites get serviced too. Maybe up to 100x100?

I would like the output to display the result in different colors simultanously. Maybe 3 times 3 sprites for 9 different colors?

Yes and I would need a simple install procedure.

And maybe a drag drop function for the original sprite?

Great idea. Please keep up to make it useable for average Joe.

Any image can be modified using this tool as long as it is in the PNG format. Larger images may not completely fit in the window at the default size, but you can resize the window as necessary in 0.1.1.

I can't help with that. Installing Wesnoth RCX is as easy as compiling it against Qt4 right now — the executable can be run without any kind of traditional installation procedure. The problem is that I need people to make binaries for Windows and Mac OS X. In theory, the source should compile in those platforms with an appropriate version of the Qt4 SDK, but I don't have a Mac, and the SDK download for Windows is too large to afford it atm.

I've attached a copy of a binary of version 0.1.2 for Macintosh computers with Intel processors.
I believe it will work with version 10.4 or later of OS X but have only tested it with 10.6.

EDIT: See later post for latest version.

Version 0.1.3, and a usable package for Windows 2000/XP and later, are released now!

EDIT: Linked the post below for the Mac OS X platform.

Keeping up with progress...

Note that you'll probably have to download the Qt framework for this to work. Since it's very large and I don't know which parts are needed, I've left the external libraries out. You should be able to get it at this location.

Seems to work fine on 10.5.8. It just took a download of 204Mb of support material in order to run the contents of an 80k zip file...

At least I know exactly what's needed for the Windows version. Maybe it'll help you with the Mac OS X bundle as well — here is some documentation on deploying Mac OS X applications with Qt 4.

Thanks for the link. I'd figured out that I needed to recompile Qt so I could link to it statically, but hadn't gotten around to identifying what I needed to do to achieve that. Your link nicely addresses that problem.

EDIT: I have a working version with everything included, but it's too large to post (13MB). As soon as I find somewhere to put it, I'll post a link.

Now Alarantalara provides us with a self-contained bundle for Mac OS X!

You can download it here: @ Alarantalara: right now it doesn't matter since it's the first file, but in the future you may want to stick to the wesnoth-rcx-X.Y.Z naming pattern instead of using "morningstar" as the file name to avoid upload problems. AFAIK I can't rename it on a non-Mac machine without breaking the bundle's structure.

This is a very handy tool; I can see myself using this to check TC for all my baseframes and animation frames. I think the thing that stood out to me most was the inability to zoom -which is very important in pixel art- since it's easier to locate a messed-up TC pixel at 300% than it is viewing the image is at 100%.

Yep, factor 2 or 3 bigger display would be great. I do not think it needs a zoom. Just a switch would be nice.
Maybe display 3x3 pics in 9 different colors regular size OR one color size factor three.

Zooming is already done, as mentioned here.
