A FOSS DAW for Windows, anyone?

Post by West »

Time and again the question comes up if there's any good free DAW available for Windows. So far I've always answered 'no'.

Today however I found a very nice free open source app called Macaw. Never heard of it before, I came across it when checking out a link to some other stuff from the same developer. I took it out for a quick spin and I was very impressed by its features. It supports ASIO and VST plugins and has a built-in wave editor, several native synths/effects and an advanced-looking routing matrix reminiscent of energyXT. It seems to be both fast and resource frugal as well, though didn't put it through any really heavy testing.

Of course, it isn't pretty. The interface looks like Windows 3.11 and some functions aren't entirely intuitive, but hey -- it's free and it seems to have some serious power under the hood. If you're looking for a free Windows DAW that isn't a toy, do give Macaw a try.

I've found one from the KVR newsletter, It calls Rax'n'trax. I'll give a try right now, I just think I should post that here before.

PS: Maybe I should open another topic because this one is unactive but I didn't find any rules about this so I think it's just better to have that information here. Anyway the moderators know what to Do

Nice find marcusvinicius! I haven't tried it myself (nor do I intend to), but please let us know what you think of it. You could always start a new topic if you think it's good and want to tell us about your experiences with it.

I'm deeply suspicious of anyone who clumps different music apps together like that and calls them "audio editors" (by defenition a DAW and an audio editor are two completely different things, though some DAW's have audio editors built in), but it's a good list nonetheless. :) I'll definitely vouch for Wavosaur, which is an incredibly powerful freebie.

It seems like it isn't open source no more. A great deception for those who give money to the project.
