A horse template

Post by JimReed »

I made a horse template, as it's listed under needed sprite art.

I was wondering if it's any good, hence, should I continue to work on it.
It's a little bigger than the standard horse, but I think it should be, anyway =)

Please post critique or/and edits.

If it passes as a good sprite, maybe it can be used under various cavalry/horsemen.

Thank you in advance.

Hard to say whether it's a good sprite when it's not finished. You seem to have a good understanding of the anatomy, though.

The horse unit rework isn't done yet, but the base frames for the horses are. What they need is a set of animations for the horses they have (which I think is partially done), and then the animations need to be applied to various mounted units. If you think you're up for it, you'd be be best off finding out from Jetrel what exactly still needs to be done.

Too bad my animation skills are not up to par. Oh well, maybe I'll try some other sprite then.

Are you any good at shading? It would be nice to see it shaded.

Not bad, not bad at all. But as a general rule, don't checkered shade with natural textures. But it is a promising start. If you don't mind I might try shading it myself?

Sure, why not? On second look, it looks a little bland compared to the rest of wesnot unit art. Ah, maybe when a saddle and gimmicks are added, it will look better.

I can see two fairly small problems.

First off I think the horse is at slightly the wrong angle, it should be facing slightly more south.
Second the mane looks more like a mohawk. That might be a problem that sorts is out during shading.

You really think the angles off? I reckon it's just the head. If you look at it's feet they look alright.

Put the sprite in-game with a standard melee attack. If it's properly aligned with a SE/SW attack, then it should be good.

To me the front legs look too sturdy in comparison to the rear ones.

I guess that depends on what type of horse it is. Sturdy front legs are entirely appropriate for a draft horse, while being much less appropriate for a race horse. I imagine that warhorses are closer to the former than the latter.

I think that impression is given by the shading, not necessarily by the shape. I have discovered that in some cases having lighter colors at the edge of a sprite gives the optical illusion of increased size. Also, I think the shading doesn't define the musculature of the forelegs as well as it could, which also lends itself to the overall impression of the forelegs being oversized.

I said in comparison to the rear legs. Draft horse's all legs are sturdy, not just the front ones.
