Try the Guardian Order campaign. It had a crossbowman in it.

Guardian Order is 1.4 UMC.

I fail to see how what version you have matters. Sure you can't play the campaign on 1.8, but you wanted the crossbowman image right? Than just download The Guardian Order and get the crossbowman from the campaign's image files. If you need the cfg, than get that too. Here's a link:

It was also ported to 1.7 at some point, but it got lost when the server was updated, IIRC.

What lucky day it is for you, because I've been plotting my comeback with a release of some low profile add-ons rather than my Guardian Order campaign. Here're the image. Unfortunately, back then, I wasn't skilled enough to animate it...

You can probably get away with only one frame for this animation. Look at how the lieutenant unit in mainline preforms his crossbow attack. You can, of course, opt to do more frames, but I would think one would suffice.
