Links to Decent but Abandoned Terrain graphics

Post by Eleazar »

Sometimes terrain graphics get mostly done and then forgotten. There may be some pretty decent stuff hidden on the lower pages of these forums. But i have my hands full without scouring the forums for terrain. That's where you come in, forum-citizen-who-always-wished-terrain-x-would-be-added-to-the-game. This thread is for posting links to forgotten terrain threads. There's a small chance something out there is good enough to be added to Mainline. More likely there are several terrains out there that are close to mainline quality, and might be finished off, if people were reminded of them.

Generally speaking alias of existing terrain types are much more likely to go in to mainline than radically new terrain types.

This could also be a useful resource for UMC designers that want a special terrain.

Format:
  • * This thread is not for ideas, half-hearted frankensteins, etc. It's for actual terrain art that works, or nearly works.

    * Quality doesn't have to be up to mainline, but it should be close-- say something like you might have found in Wesnoth a few years ago. No point in linking to something so bad that an artist would have to start over from scratch.

    * Include a link to the terrain's thread in your post.

    * Include in an Img tag(s) the most finished screenshot(s) of that terrain you can find. This will make it much more likely the terrain gets attention. Who wants to follow up a bunch of blind links?

    * If there's a new terrain in some UMC that also meets these requirements, feel free to include that too with the necessary information, and screenshots even if you have to make them yourselves.

    * Comments about a specific terrain should go in the original thread.

    * Post off topic may be deleted.
Thanks.

Stars - they could be interesting replacement/alternative to using void:

REDONE & COMMITED

Image
http://forums.wesnoth.org/download/file ... &mode=view - example map (screenshot)
http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=28425 - topic I created under ideas subforum

Actually those stars images are committed, but they doesn't have terrain WML so using them requires using some strange macros and in that ideas topic I also posted archive that include planets/stars and other graphic files that could give some more variations for starry void.

Partially snowed terrains

Image
topic: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php ... 6&start=30
last screen? http://forums.wesnoth.org/download/file ... &mode=view

Maybe could work as plain without frozen/snowed (would allow to do maps that have reasonable balance and winter theme).

I hope both are good enough to be posted here :hmm: .
Cheers

I don't know if these are precisely what you're looking for.

That's fine.
Cliffs IMHO don't fit into Wesnoth's gameplay without causing problems, but this thread is about art. There's no limitation about posting only terrains that are practical -- that evaluation is best made after the forums have been reminded of the terrain's existence.

For what it is worth, as a map-maker I was disappointed that the cliff terrain never made it to fruition.

Mod EDIT:
eleazar in the first post wrote:* Comments about a specific terrain should go in the original thread.

* Post off topic may be deleted.
EDIT: Alright feel free to delete it then.

Snow Drifts: I always thought they look nice and give snowy maps a greater variety. Fortunately, doofus-01 is still around. Unfortunately, he lost interest in it.

This dry, cracked earth was looking very promising:

Dunno if this is what you're looking for (it's not very complete at all), but Jetrel reacted favorably in the thread, and I think it's awesome:

Mountain by Shadow/Wayfarer

There are more variations in the thread itself.
