advertising gets out of hand

Post by vonHalenbach »

Today i have seen an ad from a partner agency on the site. What comes next? Poker? Viagra? I find it to be a little bit too much for wesnoth, where mostly teens surf around.

Teens instantly die when they read "Meet attractive singles near you!".
Won't somebody please think of the children?
The internets are so innocent... Wesnoth spoils our fragile minds. :annoyed:

There are adds on the website? Sorry, long time FF/addblock users keep forgetting about that.

If you support a site, you shouldn't adblock it! (Actually, I can find contradictory information about this. It may not be true.)

Besides, the advertisements are amusing.

I've been meaning to take off adblock on wesnoth. This thread was a good reminder. Hopefully I'll see this thread at work to remind me there.

I agree with the OP though. You should ask (google?) to keep the advertising professional.

And I also, given that the majority of visitors are kids under 18. I mean, there's tons of bad stuff on the internet, but I don't think Wesnoth has to support any of it.

What it looks in the screenshot, none of the girls there is nude. Do we really have to protect people playing a wargame (= where you kill people) from "meet singles near you"?

How is an online dating site "bad stuff"?

Yeah that's not why I agree with the OP... kids aren't going to die by viewing the ad (their computers might if they click on it).

In the screenshot, yes. I don't know if there are any nude people there, but some people couldn't resist finding out... and then what if it turned out there were? IMO I don't think it's suitable for the age group that makes up the majority of Wesnoth's community. I personally have never heard of or visited the site (and do not intend on doing so), but whenever I see something like that, it sets off alarm bells.

Not a Wesnoth.org-specific problem.

Not a problem at all either.

Nothing needs to be discussed here.

You know why kids won't care about Google's advertisement?
Because they know better ways to find porn.
In fact, people under 18 are the biggest consumers of internet porn (E. Nobis, 'Porno: de bom onder een relatie', Opzij 2005-7/8), according to the APA(?) in half of the on-line sex cases "the victims were described as being in love with or feeling close bonds with the offenders", the guy who invented the GPL license (used for Wesnoth) wrote pedophilia should be legalized (and he's far from alone), and so on.
But, for science sake, let's not get into a discussion about this subject.
