Setanesh (Faction Thread)

Post by Issyl »

Been working on this faction for a few days (mostly sprites and unit stats) and came up with this.

Basically, the idea is that these are a cross between Elves and bandit humans. They rely on a type of runic magic called glyphs, conduct aztec-esque human sacrifice ceremonies, and are extremely xenophobic. They live in very dark woodlands and thick forests, and have allies with many of the creatures there, like spiders and Ents. They're not inherently evil, but are far more likely to terrorize a human populace than to be kind to it. Above all, they are reclusive, prone to tradition, and almost even fundamentalist.

Art thread.

Re: Currenly creating [insert faction name here]

Post by Issyl »

I'm currently looking for ideas for new units, and suggestions for attributes for units (because I know i made some sort of ridiculously rigged unit or super-underpowered unit in there, no matter how hard I tried to make them fair.

Any suggestions or comments would be great, thanks for reading.

Re: Setanesh (Faction Thread)

This will be the first in a series of fluff posts about the faction.
The Setanesh
Deep, in the dark forests of the world, creatures lie; Spiders, ancient spirits, demons, gods, and aberrations. All of them were once declining in the face of the advance of civilization and technology.

Enter "The Legend of Setan."
The legend says many things about the origin of the figure known as Setan - runaway slave, ruler of a kingdom, the son of a local king, or a rebel that led a failed coup. Whatever his origins, Setan was fleeing, fleeing with all his strength. He found himself inside a dark forest - not unlike the one he just described. But soon enough, Setan's pursuers found him in the forest - and a battle ensued in which Setan was wounded. Managing to escape again, Setan begged to the spirits in the forest for all their strength - and they responded in kind.

Some time later, rumors grew of a dark people in the farthest reaches of the world - a civilization, if you could call it that. These people were nomads within the forests, neither taking nor giving to the woods themselves, only surviving, and bonding with the entities within.

The northern civilizations soon named this faction the Setanesh, for the origins of these peoples had a coincidentally similar origin to the tale of Setan. Nobody knew if the rumors were true; but ask a Setanesh, and he will give you no answer you desire, but only an answer you dread. Indeed, the Setanesh themselves seem to lack discussion of their origins.

In summary, whatever the origins of the peoples known as "Setanesh," it is my dissertation that we may not ever discover such origins.

Defectors from the dark forests speak in hushed tones of nature rituals, human sacrifices, a diverse, yet radical culture, and no centralized government or chain of command.

From what Order intelligence can gather, Setanesh culture consists of roving bands of various groups that meet to trade, conduct rituals, engage in symbolic, staged combat, and even ally temporarily for warfare. Contrary to normal barbarian cultures seen in the east, the Setanesh seem to have distinct, different factions that constantly vie for power and have different values, interests, and motives. Future reports will comment on the factions that we currently have intelligence on.

(The report cuts off here; someone has ripped the parchment.)

The Shaman Caste
"Through nature and prophecy, one can learn all things." - Soothsayer Gein

Shamans are mystics and prophets of the various Setanesh clans.

These mystics offer no offensive spells, but can simultaneously heal and lead their troops, and fight well with staves - many experienced swordsmen have seen shame in the face of the skills of a Shaman.

In battle, these Shamans and Soothsayers are an incredibly powerful leadership force on the battlefield, wielding staves with the grace of an elf, and the power of a giant's hammer.
