Cuttlefish sprite redesign - finished

Post by Mefisto »

Here is my try with cuttlefish. First is defense animation. Attack and death will come later because they are longer.

It looks like he's jumping out of the water in the base frame. :?

While the quality is a step up from our current cuttlefish, I'm a little concerned about the size - your design is a very large and intimidating unit, while the Cuttlefish itself is only a L2 unit. Is this an issue worth worrying about?

I would say no. Its appearances are so rare that when it is included, it is meant to be a huge and intimidating unit, despite its level.

The one possible problem, though, is it's use in the Dead Water campaign, where one is can join you and has a level 3 version, the Kraken. It would be hard to make a Kraken look bigger and badder than this, and you'd need new graphics for it as well, but it good be done.

At any rate this Cuttlefish DOES look fantastic.

The size can be a problem. This unit fits into a box 72*72 pix but it slightly sticks out of a hex. But not much. I made so far blocking for poison attack.

Yeah, this will create a problem for me. The current kraken is a bit smaller than this cuttlefish, so it will have to be redone, and there is no more room. I may have to just use the same graphics for both levels, as lame as that is.

Maybe you could just recolor this version and give it claws or something.

Directly from the wikipedia.
Wikipedia wrote:Skin

Cuttlefish are sometimes referred to as the chameleon of the sea because of their remarkable ability to rapidly alter their skin color at will. Cuttlefish change color and light polarity to communicate to other cuttlefish and to camouflage themselves from predators.
The creature is known for changing colors, don't remember well if they turned red when angry tought, but it may be something to take into account for the animations (like defending/attack)

The poison ink attack block is looking awesome, and I don't think that being a bigger than the hex is a problem, it isn't a recruitable unit (usually) but a monster you usually find in the campaigns, like the dragon.

Kraken can be not longer but thicker, with larger eyes, with claws on tentacles so it would differentiate enough from L2 unit. But first I finish all animations for cuttlefish and then I will worry about kraken.

Cuttlefish don't change color like chameleons. They change color like fireworks displays. They do fast, pulsing technicolor patters that migrate around their bodies. Sometimes their skin looks like a crazy screensaver. That doesn't suggest a solution to my problem, but does suggest an idle animation!

Do you want to design the kraken? I can put up a request in the Dead Water art thread, but I won't if you're interested in doing it.

I think we'd be daft not to, once it's fully animated. I'll check up with jet that he's OK with it first, though.

Units don't have to fit in the hex or a 72x72 pixel square. They can extend onto all of the surrounding hexes and possibly further.
