Free sprites
I was going to do a Warhammer 40000 era but this has been banned by the powers that be so I have no use for these sprites and any one who needs some sprites can have these. Just modify them or the "powers that be" might get annoyed.
Have fun.

Re: Free sprites
You'd get away with the guardsmen (though possibly not the chainswords) but the astartes is unique enough to be basically unusuable for any of our purposes - GW tend to be highly protective of their intellectual property, and we want to cover ourselves.

Re: Free sprites
Ah. Okay here is a new sprite sheet without the Ultramarine or the bolt gun.

Re: Free sprites
Though we might not be able to use these directly, you've provided a very good basis for anyone who needs a rankenpack of modern troops. Nice work.
Re: Free sprites
Thanks. I still think it would be cooler to make them into a WH40K mod but seeing as that is not allowed that will have to do.

Re: Free sprites
You can do it, but just not here (nor distribute it using the addon server)
Re: Free sprites
I can imagine it would be fun to have a WH40K era that I could play but all that hard work and I would be the only one to play it and appreciate it. Plus the fact I cannot script makes things very tricky. Mabe not a good idea.

Re: Free sprites
Although you can't have a WH era doesn't mean you can't use these units.
There are plenty of units/eras that were inspired by game things.

Re: Free sprites
Inspired by =/= derivative of. We are inspired (heavily) by LotR. However, Wesnoth is not an LotR game. Riding flightless birds is not without inspiration in the real world, after all (see: Ostrich Racing).
Discussing this will not change it, and will probably lead to threads being closed. Just so you know

Re: Free sprites
Well why not put all that work into coming up with a unique idea which can be distributed? Why not use the idea of Imperial Guard and create a unique set of sprites with a new background and look?Major wrote:I can imagine it would be fun to have a WH40K era that I could play but all that hard work and I would be the only one to play it and appreciate it. Re: Free sprites
That might work I suppose. I see what I can come up with.

Re: Free sprites
Doesn't change the point, but - that is really a pseudo-reason; Chocobones are very obviously referencing Chocobos, and bringing in Ostrich racing is very obviously retroactive. The difference here is homage versus plagiate, which is more subtle.thespaceinvader wrote:Riding flightless birds is not without inspiration in the real world, after all (see: Ostrich Racing).

Re: Free sprites
Also true. Suffice it to say, a WH40k era will not happen. A futuristic military era is fair game, but nothing that is derivative of GW intellectual property.
For now, enough.

Re: Free sprites
OK. I accept that and I am not making one the point here was that I now have a whole lot of sprites and absolutley no use for them so if anyone wants to use them feel free. This was not supposed to be a gripe session about GPL and copying. I am sorry if I came across that way.

Re: Free sprites
Hi all, first post here, been playing wesnoth for years, yadda yadda, sorry if i'm rezzing this thread.
instead of making something that is specifically WH40k why not make something that would be similar to "wesnoth 40k"? i'm not saying it would be a derivitave of WH40k but it CAN be influenced by it. and no, it wouldn't be called "wesnoth 40k" either, but i do think a futuristic wesnoth setting would be incredibly awesome.
