Telaron's try at making an art portrait

Post by Telaron »

How's this? Don't ask about the name. I know I need to work on the shading.

Hmm, your chances of contributing this to the mainline are pretty slim right now. Overall the form is good, but the lines need more... what's the word? Anyway, they need to be a bit more precise and less wandering. Portraits also usually face to the right. I think if you went over this with a smoother brush or something, it might also look less hand-drawn and more realistic. You could try filling in the various sections of the portrait in with a solid color and then shading it. I'm no portrait artist, but these are my observations and suggestions, so take them for what you will.

:hmm: This seems to be a nice line drawing.
But the colouring really doesn't work at all. What I see looks like random fuzzy grey dots. That's not good. For starters: define a lightsource and use (a lot) bigger brushes. Don't be afraid of contrast. And use a reference! A basic digital painting tutorial.

Apart from that the Wesnoth portrait standard is zoomed out and showing the figure's waist line. And all the generic portraits for the Loyalists are already done.

Good luck! And I'm moving this to the Art Workshop where art for User Made Campaigns and everything non mainline is produced :)

First question: Is it finished? ;)

For a start, it's not bad, although not entirely symmetric.

In answer to Zarel's question, no it is not finished. I still have to smooth the drawing to make it a little more... believable. The drawing, if you take a close look at it, has a grainy outline. That is because it was drawn in Art Rage, A program I do not often use. Still, I didn't draw it for the mainline, and I don't expect it to ever make it into the mainline. This was just one of those projects that one does when one has nothing better to do. I did like the results though it doesn't look like any units I've ever seen. If you zoom in on the lower half of the portrait, you can see that I am still in the middle of removing the excess pixels (long story). Still I hope It will have some use. This was one of my first tries at creating art.

These are just a few things that i did recently. The helms are hand-free. The portrait I did for usr-sbin. It may look a little old for his purposes. I also did this hand-free. The Knight's Helm, I am well aware, is not the best. I did this one in under ten minutes so i didn't really give it all I had.

Nice work throughout =)

The attack icons, in particular, are very nicely done. With a little sharpening up, you could probably subit attack icons for mainline, if you felt up to it. There are still a few we need.

Thanks! What do I sharpen up? Are there any other attack icons that are needed?

The first one would benefit from a little extra contrast, particularly around the edges. The second probably needs much lighter line art, but more contrast too.

Take a look at the mainline ones, up close, you'll get some good ideas - but be aware that they're all drawn at LEAST 4x the final size...

The great helm one looks good to me. The helmet one still needs a bit of sharpening up. Where parts of it cross over, make the edges clearer. Maybe a fine line would do this, not sure. Also, the inner part needs to be darker - though not actually black, to avoid blending with the background.

I'll have a word with Jet next time I see him and see if these are good to go in.

http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic. ... ttack+icon is the current mainline atack icons thread. There may well be some things in there I need to commit though, actually...

The swords look like daggers to me. I would suggest making the hilts smaller and shorter, and maybe the blades thinner.

Thank you Telaron, I think he may look slightly too old but he is certainly better than the portrait I have at the moment.

Okay. he looks a little old because I shaded his cheeks a bit. maybe I'll remove that. See what it looks like without it. Get back to you in a day or so.

Here's the newest helm.
