Fencer

Post by monochromatic »

I was reading unit descriptions for fun today, and when I came across the fencer description:

"Fencers belong to a school of thought that considers the armor most soldiers wear in combat to be their own worst enemy. While armor can only soften a blow, evading it leaves the defender completely unharmed. Being able to reliably dodge any offensive move is a luxury only afforded to the fit of body, and then only to those who endure rigorous training.

Outfitted with only a dagger and saber, fencers are light on their feet and useful in many situations where their armor-bound peers are at a disadvantage. They take relish in dancing circles around troops like heavy infantry, mocking the weight of their full armor."

I'm just curious, did the fencer originally have a ranged attack, like a dagger 7-1 pierce attack? It would seem to make sense considering the Duelist and Master-at-Arms. And NO, I am not suggesting we add a ranged attack; it would horribly throw the balance and pricing off track. I'm just curious, that's all

Daggers were also used as sidearms. Really, no sword-wielding warrior would be without one.

That's true, daggers are perfect for protecting hands, and no, there is no attack because it was supposed to be a deffense...

And dagger is piercing??What??

The Fencer's dagger is not a ranged attack, it's just a style thingy which he never actually uses as far as the game mechanics are concerned. :) He fights with a sabre, which is a bladed weapon.

The Duelist and Master-at-Arms get their ranged attacks from crossbows.

I always thought that the smaller saber was a dagger... you know, the one in his other hand.

Or maybe it's just a 2D game's way of showing depth, I'm not sure... :D

Indeed, I am a bird. But as birds go, I'm more like an awkward fowl who's going extinct and can't fly.

It is. A parrying dagger. Used for, shockingly enough, parrying, not throwing.

Oh. What I meant it as is a thrown dagger (see the Bladesman from the Frost Elves in the Imperial era)

Back as far as 1.0, the fencer had only a melee attack.

I always thought of throwing daggers as in the realm of thieves and rogues, and so the lawful fencer would always be holding onto his.

Wait, what happens when the fencer levels up, does he now parries with his crossbow? :lol2:

This is hilarious, as HI make mincemeat out of Fencers. :lol2:

Doesn't say fencers can kill HIs. It says they can dancer circles round them - that is to say, outmanoeuvre them. Which they can. 6 MP, skirmisher and a better movetype.

It also says that they mock them, which, given appropriate label usage, they can also do :D

Yep, 6 MP is just about enough to make a full circle around a HI, if terrain allows :) .
