COMING GAMES:
---------------------------

STATUS:
Registration Phase: FINISHED
Organisation Week: FINISHED
1st Round of the GRAND TAG!: FINISHED
2nd Round of the GRAND TAG!: FINISHED
The GRAND TAG! FINAL ROUND: FINISHED

1.What is it?
- The GRAND TAG! is a wesnoth default era & settings (except Time of Day) 2vs2 tournament. It's meant to be played by 8 teams.
2. When it will begin?
- The GRAND TAG! will begin after the recruitment phase - that is since closing the team list
3. What are the general rules of the tournament?
- tournament will be played with the standard tournament elimination system:
Image
- match for a 3rd place is possible if both teams that will lose with the finale players will agree to play for it
- tournament is meant to be played on the newest stable version of the game, with default xp and map settings
- each team plays up to 3 matches in the round, winner of the 2 of 2 OR 2 of 3 is the winner of the round and goes to the next round with losing team eliminated from the GRAND TAG.
- team cannot play using the same ip. adress
- subbing one teammate by the other during the game in run is NOT ALLOWED unless opponents will agree on it. Player that is subbed cannot spy enemy team and has to regain control over his troops ASAP.
- teams are FIXED, but IT"S POSSIBLE to get 1 substitute player if it's necessary to play out the round altough in the finale games, substitutions are not allowed.
- if one side has technical problems, it has a right to postpone the game ONCE, to continue it after fixing the problem BUT the side that asks to postpone HAS TO contact the opponents immediately and make an appointment to continue the game in the next 3 days and opponents are meant to find a time to continue the game during this period of time. After this period, if postponing team won't contact the opponents, it will automatically lose the game. It's lex specialis to the rule below.
- both sides can continue the match another day if all players will agree to do that.
- every round lasts 14 days and teams HAVE TO play the round games during this time. If they won't, they are disqualified from the tournament. It's a superior rule. It means that teams can postpone the game, and every team has a right to postpone a game due to the technical problems, but it's all limited by the 14 days period of each round so think well before postponing.
- round period may be shortened if all the tournament players will agree on it.
5.What are the timer settings?
- 5:00 starting timer, +360s reservoir, +300s turn bonus, no action bonus
6. What are the rules about the maps?
- Time of Day has to be FIXED, so don't forget to turn off "Random Start Time" option. It's for sake of map balance.
- map for the first game of the round has to be chosen with mutual acceptation of the both teams
- map for the second game is chosen by the team that lost the first game
- map for the third game is chosen by the winners of the first game
- players may chose to play the tournament games from the following default maps:
4p Blue Water Province
4p Clash (updated, player sequence is different, check point 12.)
4p Castle Hopping
4p Loris River
4p Paths of Daggers
4p Xanthe Chaos
- modifications & old versions of the maps are NOT ALLOWED
7. Rules regarding matches & forum
- teams are obliged to inform when they will play the game in this topic and allow observers to join their games. Games played in the tournament system has to have a "TGT" acronym, number of the game , number of the round & team that participate in their names !
8. Cheating
- cheating is not allowed, cheating teams will be banned from the tournament
9. Recruitment phase
- starts today, you can join the tournament sending me a PM with your team name. Recruitment message MUST have full nicknames of the players that will play in the team, it's forbidden to send a recruitment messages with only 1 player listed in them. Both players have to be registered on the boards to secure fluent communication between the teams! Because number of places in the tournament is limited, time of sending the recruitment message decides.
- RESERVATION: if you want to play the tournament, but you don't have the teammate yet, please post in this thread that you're interested & you're looking for the one. Other players might be in the same situation as you're. It will also reserve you a spot in the tournament.
10. When we can start playing the games ?
- after closing the team list&official annoncement about beginning of the round 1 of the tournament. I (as the host of the tournament) will announce such things.
11.Other cases not included in the rules
- other cases not included in the rules & rules breaches will be decided by me, I want to play the tournament too so I urge other players to save replays from the games, post them here and observe other ppl games to secure maximum level of fairness in this tournament. I also promise that I will make a decisions in the best interest of every player of the tournament - if my team will need some form of GM decision, I will cede my tournament host rights to the other team to get a fair judgement.

Just so you are aware, Clash has been updated. I suggest you use this new version for tournament rules.

Updated Clash

We've tried 2v2 tournaments in the past, but it kind of bombed due to time zones mostly. I hope this one goes much better!

I'll probably play if I can find a teammate, but for the moment I'll just wish you luck.

cheers,

It is a nice initiative and it sure looks tempting for me to join (and I bet for some others too). Thanks for the invitation, Faello. I might join but only if I manage to find a partner with whom I've already played many games together. So I can not say a definite "yes", at least not yet. I'll keep you informed; and if every place gets filled up before I do, no worries and have fun .

However, have in mind that it is extremely difficult to get the same 4 people together at an arranged time. It is not as twice as difficult as getting two people to play in 1v1 tourney, it is perhaps 20 times as difficult. Also, some people might get AWOL in the middle of the tourney. Therefore, I'd like to suggest you to allow each team to have the right to have one substitute player who can fill in the place of either of the two players in the team anytime there is a need for it.

It has been done.

Anyway, I wish you best luck with the tournament. I hope you can prove the skeptics wrong and show that 2v2 wesnoth tournaments are actually possible to organize.
Theoretically, love is great
but it is a little bit different in practice.

Np Mythological, yes I'm aware that setting a good level 2vs2 is really hard. Regarding subsitutions...hmm...yes, right to 1 substitute player seems to be reasonable, espescially it's a summer time. I'll use your experience and put that in the rules. Thanks for advice and sticking the topic :)

Yes, I already discussed this matter with Mythological and Noy4, I promise I'll do my best to make it work fine, time zones are a hard nut to crack, I believe that first round will be a test if whole tournament idea will work well, Mythological advised me to check on the previous tournament threads to search for the causes of their failures. I'll do that and make changes in the rules if necessary.

I invite everybody that knows how to play, I want to keep a friendly atmosphere around it ( winning is not a top priority here, as much it's pleasant :) ) and I'll keep an eye on the whole project even if CDeath will eat dirt in the first round of The GRAND TAG!. Every participant has my word if it's going about that. Only thing I'm afraid is not getting enough ppl to fil lthe roster, but let's hope that period of 3 weeks to join it, will resolve this problem :)

Maybe you should allow people to register just with their nicknames, and let them find a good team-name later. Because if they would like to participate, but dont have a team-name yet, it might keep them away from registering. :hmm:

I've just added the RESERVATION option for the ppl that want to join but are not sure yet with whom they will play with. Hope it will help to get more players.

Players interested in the tournament are also welcome to leave the messages here to search the teammates :)

OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear players, all the spots for the tournament have been taken 2 weeks before the fixed date, thank you all for registering :)

I officially announce end of the registration phase of the tournament and beginning of the Organisation Week that will last since now to 14th July 2009 8:00 of GMT.

I also announce that 14th July 2009 8:00 of GMT is the beginning of the tournament !

During the Organisation Week (7 to 14 July 8:00 GMT) we have to:
a) choose the system of matchups
b) set the dates of the matches with our opponents in the 1st Round and inform others and possible observers about them in this topic
c) train :D

1st Round begins with the beginning of the tournament (14th July 2009, 8:00 GMT) and ends after 14 days (28th July, 8:00 GMT). Once again, I remind that all matches of the first round have to be played during this period, with their results posted here in the topic.

You cannot play tournament games of this round before or after this period.

Now, let's get to the:

a) System of Matchups

I propose option 1 as a fair and quick way to set the tournament tree BUT if anybody will have anything against it, we can go with either option 2 or 3.

If nobody from the player list will protest against option no. 1 during the 48 hours since this announcement, I consider this matter closed and we won't go back to it, so you have 48 hours to post your protest or agree on other solution than solution number 1. Please remember about it :)

OPTIONS:
1.Default

We'll play the tournament using the system posted in the first post:
Image
And we'll link the team number to the registration number, it would give us following matchups in the 1st Round of the GRAND TAG!:

CDeath(1) vs Noob Leavers(8)
SPaM(2) vs Jean & kit Team(7)
Crimson Blades(3) vs Les nuls(6)
Team WC(4) vs Drunken Isarmongers(5)

2.First Alternative

Team 1 will play with Team 2, Team 3 with Team 4, Team 5 with Team 6, Team 7 with Team 8.

3.Second Alternative

We can use some form of lottery (for example using lottery numbers to set the configuration of the teams) using PM's, other user not inflicted in the tournament etc. but it may take a lot of time and prolong Organisation Week to something closer to the Organisation Month :P so I really advice everybody to think twice if they want to chose this option.

b) Setting games

After announcement about matchups (48 hours since this one) you can start setting the games with players you'll face in 1st Round of The GRAND TAG!

- Please, set games using PM's and try to check your message box couple times during the day, it's necessary to make whole tournament work :)

- You can contact me via PM or using ICQ number that's in my profile

- I know that CragHack and Radament have ICQ numbers too and I urge on the other players to install this program at least for the time of the tournament. It saves the history of conversation and gives you ability to contact each other in the present time. It might be very useful.

- Once again, I advice tournament players that doesn't have the accounts on the forum to register here for sake of the tournament.

c) train

- Good luck with trainings guys :)

If all/enough players are open to this, I would suggest playing the games on the development server. If tournament games are played on the development server, then players playing/watching them will also be encouraged to log on and perhaps play some there. And more players on the dev server means more testing => more bug reports/bugfixes => better Wesnoth!

EDIT: I thought that Wintermute meant server no. , as stated in the tournament rules, players are obliged to use the stable version of wesnoth, everybody has to stick to this rule :)

btw. there's new stable BfW - 1.6.4 - DOWNLOAD IT !

I suggest to stick to the official stable default server, to get more attention from the other players, we'll use 1.6.4 version to play the tournament.

Is it ok to use latest 1.6 svn branch? which should gives 1.6.4+svn.
This is the version I am using since about 2 years without any issues on game play. Maybe a developer should step in and clarify whether it is fully compatible and official.

The reason to use svn is to download only the changes; as example when changing from 1.6.3 to 1.6.4. Besides that, when travelling from 1.6.3 to 1.6.4, you can get to 1.6.3.1, then 1.6.3.2, etc. The usual changes being in translation files and artwork.

This is my best explanation to vulgarize svn. I personally and honestly don't see any issues at all using it, but wanted to put it under light.
