Re: Loyalist Portrait Series
Shading in progress for the Knight.
There'll be a revised Horseman sometime soon, accounting for most comments.
Kitty : the horse was made only with standard photoshop brushes, but I've started to collect some for less common textures, such as cloth patterns and foliage. Should you be willing to share any, I'd be curious to see what your custom brushes look like.

Yeah, afaik, horses have a muscle that bulges out there.Kestenvarn wrote:horse muscleJW wrote:green line: my eye cannot understand why this area is light, especially with the surrounding areas are so dark.
right?
Again, intimidating work on the knight's steed.

You did such a good job on the horse that the rider seems cartoonish

That's cos he's not finished yet =P...
Also, his arms still feel a little skinny to me... And i think you should be careful of making the mane too shiny - in my experience, horse hair tends to be a little more coarse and less shiny than that.

That is a marvelous piece The only thing I can notice is that the bit is not tight in the horse's mouth. It appears that he's pushing it out with his tongue which he wouldn't be able to do. I'm not sure if you need to extend the horses lower lip or move the bit further back to correct this. Maybe a little of both. I'm including some pictures to help. It's a privilege to watch these portraits unfold!

Good job on the horse again
The bit might be loose for another reason - this will be a very well trained and disciplined horse, and there's no need for the bit to be tight. The way it's connected it physically couldn't lower it's head to eat grass, and the rider would only need to use the bit in dire circumstances, and in those circumstances he wouldn't be light about it!
My two pence (or cents if you're over the pond)

@ Cloud: Of course the bit can rest at the back of the mouth without being drawn tight, but being that loose the horse could hurt itself. Also a horse should never eat grass with the bridle on as it wraps around the bit choking the horse - that's what halters are for.
Here's a picture of a trained 'warhorse':

Isn't sharing what we are all here for? Here is my standard set of photoshop brushes (beware 14mb), i can't remember the sources for all of them, it's a mixed collection from all over the net I don't use special brushes for special textures most of the time but rather to break up the digital cleanliness in general. Feel like sharing yours, too?Should you be willing to share any, I'd be curious to see what your custom brushes look like.
for the knight: I really like what he is starting to look like! the silver-red colour scheme works very effectively!
Apart from the issue with the bridle something bothers me about the horses neck - what is the bulge at its lower end meant to be? afaik horse necks run straight (or curve in slightly) and only the shoulder curves out again, but in your case the shoulder clearly sits lower.

Re: Loyalist Portrait Series
Finished the knight, I'm now working on the final horseman.
Kitty: thanks for the brushes, it's really an interesting set you have. I will gather a set of mine very soon.

Simply a stunning portrait for the Grand Knight! It really makes the unit justice.
