Cuttle Fish

Post by fmunoz »

I got a very productive lunch break.. I was able to pencil and ink this nice cuttlefish portrait start, still need some clearing and a bit more tentacle detail at the bottom but no time nor tools at hand here.
I have a larger image available if anyone wants to improve or colour it.

It's a great start. The wings look a bit fake though like there not part of his body. Probably because they're too square.

Looks great to me. Clearly, it needs some cleaning up, but in terms of style, it looks fine - I'd agree with the comment about the wings, though - they'd look better if they were a little bigger, and went the full length of the ...head? body? whatever you call that part of a cuttlefish's anatomy...

Personally I'd really like it if the tentacles were more prominent. They're more or less the main focus of the whole unit, IMO. The head/body could be tilted backwards a bit more so it takes up less vertical space and isn't such a main feature of the whole picture.

...uh...

Oh, wait, sorry, thought it was one of the Elder Gods. My mistake.

Anyway, it looks really cool. I agree with TSI about the flaps on his head looking a bit disconnected. It'd be nice to have his tentacles a bit more prominent also, but IMO it's fine as-is. And I don't think you could just tilt the head and add in some tentacles, because the head would probably end up looking weird; you'd have to redo the composition entirely.

I think that pic is excellent, for what my word's worth. (Very little, I know) If you color it the same as the unit, I daresay that with a little editing, it would look like the real unit enlarged.

Ah, whatever, Great Old Ones. But it's not like the terms are technically precise anyway - they're just human terms used to describe beings that don't speak languages even remotely related to ours, after all. We're no more incorrect calling Cthulhu an Elder God than we are a Great Old One - just like we're no more incorrect pronouncing it kulu, kutulu, etc, since the human mouth is not designed to speak that alien language.

(And I've never read Derleth.)

Maybe put 1-2 tentacles upward so they're more obvious and if you can pull it off even looking like they try to catch the watcher?

DISCLAIMER: I know, I just ignored all those nice tips about how to improve but... I'm stuck with no tablet nor scanner and wanted to try colouring it.
I'll try to fix the line art tomorrow.
Meanwhile I checke how it looks at portrait scale.

Very nice, I like the way you colored the eyes, it makes them appear shiny and almost sticky like I would expect.

Needs coloured line art, whilst you're at it =)

I think you could stand some brighter point highlights - it would really add to the slimy feeling.

I like your color choices, but compositionally it just doesn't look angry enough nor huge enough in my humble opinion.
