To me the shape of the gem looks to much diamond-like. For a typical ruby shape i would prefer something like this:
ruby shape

Somehow i messed up with the url tags :?

While it's true that the octagonal shape might be more common with rubies, I'm afraid it wouldn't have the same instant "gemstone" recognition value as the diamond cut. It is meant as a symbolic representation after all, and probably only a handful of people even know what the actual Ruby of Fire even looks like.

And hey, I can provide a SVG file with different versions for the ruby and the flame on different layers, so people can choose the combination they personally prefer for their own artwork. :)

Perhaps its just me, but it seems the white details on the ruby are at a different angle than the outline. They curve in more, but the outline seems to still be the same one from LordBob's, just truncated. I'm probably wrong though.

You're right and wrong--The forum's fuzzy version messes them up a little, but the actual image is fine :)

Bingo. That one or the one skizz posted. I think this reads much better as a gem than the diamond shape.

I go with what Skizzaltix posted, seeing the actual flames around the gem and scepter is a nice touch.

nice! really nice!

i think the current gemstone/ruby works very well and is readable on first sight.

from a graphic design standpoint i'd just like to see some more flame variations. the circular one evokes too many (star/squid/whatever) unwanted associations. and the more flame-ish one is a bit unpolished, especially the last three pikes to the right are crude.
and i see a problem with the four little gaps between the parts of the sceptre. they are simply too small - always keep in mind how small this thing will be used. it will be tiny and often distorted, you need to make a "robust" logo that can survive being tiny and embossed on a shield with scratches on top of that. if you really want to keep those gaps, make them bigger. be decisive. or decide to use no gaps at all.

and it would be nice if you managed to make it work well flipped, too. i assume it will be used on quite a numer of portraits which are used flipped automatically by the game. the current version looks somewhat unbalanced when mirrored. some work on the bottom part can fix that.

keep it up!

It's a good point about flippability, one thing that's important that it shouldn't be too obvious when it's flipped, even though not everything is going to be symmetric about it.

But things never get out of balance by flipping, if it doesn't look balanced after being flipped, then it wasn't balanced to begin with. It's probably the hook. It was fashioned out of the same square as the ruby (the original, solid one) and now that the ruby has been changed, the hook needs to be reworked anyway.

No problem about widening the gaps, and I will still be trying out some more variations to the flame part.

Yeah, the hook definitely wants shrinking - even before it was about the same size as the gem, and detracted somewhat from it. A good deal smaller would be excellent.

Turtle and crocodile skins to me, with odd night-ish colors.

Some sort of leather or animal skin, of a slightly odd and dark color. Where are you going with this?

Both look like skin, might be human skin but its a extreme closeup.
The second one looks like skin that bends a lot, back and forth (elbows knees wrists etc).
