Dragon sprite
Hi everybody,
I decided to do some sprites myself.
Usually I do more 3D stuff but I really want to push my 2D-"Skills".
This is my first attempt at creating some spriteanimation.
Don't know if anyone can actually use these ... but hey .. it's my first try ^^
Comments and Feedback would be great.
( Oh and sorry for my bad english, it's even worse than my art )

Re: Dragon sprite
Possibly, but considering your art is very nice this is not saying much.pixelmind wrote:( Oh and sorry for my bad english, it's even worse than my art )
The only real snag I see is that the wings get a little messed up on the down beat. About halfway through the down beat the membranes in back abruptly go from being approximately horizontal to suddenly sticking out high in back, which makes it look like the wings are twisting in an awkward fashion.
Other than that smallish problem it's all very well done, although maybe it could use just a liiiiittle more contrast. That's largely a stylistic issue however, even if it would be nice to differentiate the front and back sides of the wings a bit.

I really like it, great job. The only tiny problem I can see is that it is hard to see his eye

Re: Dragon sprite
Awesome cool!
This is really great, why didn't anybody talked about the fire drake??!!
(the following is only personal though, even if it can match some other people comments, this is just a subjective opinion from someone not competent in the art of drawing sprites)
Well, as TL pointed out, there should be some more difference about the upper and the lower part of the wings...
About the contrast, i don't know if it's needed for the whole body, but at least for the head, i think it would help differentiate the end of the head and the start of the neck...
Maybe using a color containing more yellow or orange for the lighting would do the trick? (not sure that it should apply for all the body...)
Last and this is some minor issue, i'm not sure the shadow is big enough, watching the new gryphon tile i found the shadow quite bigger, but your dragon seems to be a lot higher than the gryphon so, maybe...
Just noticed on the flying sprite, that the light on its right front arm blinks somehow... (should be second frame + it's copy?) (+ minor same thing on the neck with a red horizontal line...)
Well, this is not much and really minor details for the last part, so maybe remains the color of the wings...
Really nice, honestly.
Good luck!
[edit: i forget to mention that the attack animation is simply excellent. (with maybe some minor bug under the belly?)

Re: Dragon sprite
Great great work on the animations, with the exceptions that the others pointed out, those are nice.
I agree with Cernunnos, I think this is a combination of the shadow not being large enough and the way it changes making it hard for the viewer to determine if the light on the dragon casting the shadow is from directly above, slightly in front, or wherever it may be.Cernunnos wrote:Last and this is some minor issue, i'm not sure the shadow is big enough, watching the new gryphon tile i found the shadow quite bigger, but your dragon seems to be a lot higher than the gryphon so, maybe.

Re: Dragon sprite
hey, the dragon is awesome
the only "problem" i see is that it is too big for a single hex, or else it may look a bit tiny compared to other units
i think the fire dragon looks more "fleshy"
this could be a possible 2-hex (non mainline) unit -

Re: Dragon sprite
No its not the standing sprite is 72/72
The moving and attacking are out of 72/72 but that is allowed

Re: Dragon sprite
ah, and .. i may have a use for that - probably even for a 2hex unit.
would be of course cool if you separate the animations into single *.png's
i always have a use for good art
newintown:
of course it is 72x72 (or whatever you scale it )
what i wanted to say is:
the sprite SHOULD be bigger to make the proportions look right
so that the leg of a spearman is not bigger than leg of dragon - got it ?
if not, it doesent matter, at least i get what i wanted to say.
if i use the dragon i will split it up in 2x 72x72
like a spaceship (a frigate) in spacenoth
...on the other hand that 2-hex spaceship wont fight melee, and thus dont move when attacking ....
so it may be a bit more difficult are all
(and thus no real option for me :p)

Re: Dragon sprite
Wow. If the Era of Myths had animations like that....well, I would be a very happy person.
Re: Dragon sprite
Woow, that's one of the coolest things I've ever seen! Oh, and a little off topic: Do "bigger than the hex" sprites work in the development versions?
Check out my sprites!
Re: Dragon sprite
Wow, thank you guys,
These are the replys I'm looking for
I 'm glad that you like my little fella.
I fixed the wing problem and belly glitch but the shadow is giving me a headache.
Should i go for something like the gryphons shadow or should the wings cast some shadow.
( Tried it several times but can't get it right )
If you consider that a entire village is also represented by an 72x72 tile .. maybe size doesn't matter
( Even though bigger units would be nice for adding some details )

Yes, thought about that but I don't know if multihex units are properly supported so I decided to make a standart size unit.Mabuse wrote: the sprite SHOULD be bigger to make the proportions look right

Re: Dragon sprite
Hmm, I think the wings' other side should probably be like the skin in the other places. It's like that on Dragons that are somewhere. Example about what I mean:
