The big Portrait Background Removal Thread
I'd like to find somebody who updates the old Lutesian portraits to the new portrait-format as an intermediate solution until new loyalist portraits in the new style are done.
First you need to delete the black background and make a nice smooth outline. So far so easy.
Second: If necessary mirror the image so that the character faces to the right.
Third: (To make things not too easy) Add on those bits that get cut off by the edges right now - like the pikeman's pike. The Portrait may still touch the bottom (obviously) and the left edge.
- cavalier
- grand knight
- halberdier
- highwayman
- javileneer
- longbowman
- pikeman
all done

I wasn't sure what you were aiming for with the "nice smooth outline", like the pikeman or more like the highwayman?

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
thanks doofus! great to see that you take the initiative!
both look pretty good already! two little nitpicks:
the new top of the halberdier's halberd looks a bit jagged - could you smoothen and straighten it more?
and there are a few stray pixels around the maze-top's lines, could you clean them up a bit?

OK. I think I can have them all done by Friday.

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
Did Lutes do these in a vector program?
(PS: I'm note sure about his right shoulder--Does that need to be there?)
(Edit: Attached Javelineer, fixed a little bit of madness on the back of the GK's helmet)

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
Hey Skizzaltix, great you want to help, too!
Two little problems - your outlines look very pixelated at the moment.
(My explanation is photoshop-specific, but gimp should do things pretty similar) I guess you're using the magic wand and select the black area, then make the selection one pixel smaller and then choose slection smoothen by 1px.
And you don't have to add stuff at the left side of the picture - only at the top and at the right. thus the grandknight's and javileneer's left shoulder are unnecessary.
(and lutes didn't use vectors. ink sketch and digital colouring)

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
the halbedier is fine now - thank you!
the longbowman's bowstring looks a bit pixelated - perhaps you could erase it and put a new straight line with the line tool in?
the cavaleryman - why did you mirror him? he was already facing towards the right... otherwise fine, too.

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
I updated the bowstring. I'm using a bad monitor, so if that's not good enough, it'll have to wait until tomorrow.
WRT cavalryman: I thought his eyes were what mattered, his face is to the left, but his eyes are to the right. Like the highwayman.

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
The smudge tool is my new best friend. Any better? (I left the Javelineer's shoulder, because cutting it off would mean cutting off the ends of some of his spears there)
Edit:
No, now it's too fuzzy. I'll redo it again in a little bit.

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
doofus: then those three are fine and can go in as they are - thanks a bunch!
the looking to/facing to was my mistake, i'm no native speaker and it shows... i corrected it in the original post now to avoid confusion.
Skizzaltix why did you use the smudge tool? that's the reason why they are fuzzy now... just select the black area(s), make the selektion a bit (1px) smaller and smoothen it (with 1 px radius) and then press delete.

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
No problem. I can't speak German, so I can't criticize.
I'd updated the first two as well (I'm not sure if you had noticed).

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
yes doofus, i overlooked the update on the first two - those are fine, too! thank you
i just did my share of portrait updating... all rather dirty but since they are only placeholders i guess they are ok.

Re: REQUEST Updates of old Lutesian Portraits
Btw, be aware that from the unofficial wesnoth gallery you can display images directly like so
You can get preformated links by selecting to see the "direct links" of an item as in this case
This means that you can upload images on the gallery and display them on the forum, without worrying about exceeding your attachment capacity.
I'm only posting this because I saw that the original links were from the unofficial gallery. Hope this helps
