Troll Hero

Post by thespaceinvader »

Inspired by this thread http://www.wesnoth.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=20984 i present a small frankenstein which may serve as a base frame for the Troll Hero instead of confusingly using the grunt's frames. I wanted to show some slightly better equipment in the form of a traditional war hammer (as opposed too the baseball-bat type thing the grunt uses, and the massive maul of the warrior), and a belt; and a different pose to differentiate the two.

Compare with the grunt: Image

Is it worth animating?

His weapon is a bit strange. Perhaps a bit little for a troll hero? :hmm:
The rest is pretty well done.

Contrary to popular belief, war hammers are/were not huge great lumps of metal. They are quite small. In fact, a relatively small striking surface is more effective, as it concentrates the force of the hit in a smaller area, doing more damage. Google image search for war hammers to see what i mean...

The animation would be essentially a copy of the grunt's - striking two handed.

Well, sure, warhammers were a bit smaller. But when you have a huge troll using them, you should make them bigger.

Tried a little edit, primarily to emphasize the shape of the hammer's head.

That weapon definitely works, not sure about all the bling, though...

EDIT: and i was actually going for a rectangular head. But meh. Yours still looks better.

The weapon can be mistaken with an axe (that's what the frame suggests to me).
Btw i wouldn't mind to have The troll Hero use an axe instead of a hammer.

I was wondering about suggesting an alternate attack which uses the spike on the back of the hammer to do Pierce damage, actually...

Perhaps you should differentiate their body a bit more. I can barely notice the different weapon.

I was thinking the same myself, the problem, though, is how... I can't see the trolls wearing armour, or anything more than modesty clothing, so... Weapons are about it...

Would it be too much work to have him look straight ahead instead of downwards? That would probably make him look more unique.

Hence the bling that megane put in ;)

But seriously I can imagine them having upper-arm-bracelets or chest-plates as adornments but probably made out of a lesser metal than gold and obviously without any armor-value.

I have made a new troll hero... Is it better or worse than the ones showed here?
EDIT: Forgot the shadow :?

Good point - the Warrior, after all, has spiked rings around his ankles. Maybe something of that order.

Tapsa: the pose would ideally be facing slightly more away from camera, but it may be useful in designing a sprite for the Great Troll. The execution, however, is a little grainy, and lacking in detail, and the arm holding the bottom end f the hammer looks very short to med. Overall, it's good but (IMHO) megane's version is better. I like the belt on yours =)

My problem with megane's is the pose is basically the same as that of the Troll; he just has a different weapon. I like Tapsa's because it shows a troll not in the "stand up straight with head bowed looking menacing" pose.
