Wish I knew why it lags so much today :annoyed:

and smiles as the puppets dance

Well, we have an update on this: I have re-designed the multiplayer server and gotten most of the major bugs out. The server is now running much faster than before, and should be more responsive for everyone.

There are still a few bugs to get out, but it should now be much better than it has been before. Today it sustained over 200 users online for about five hours, with no crashes or other downtime and reasonable response times.

Thanks to everyone for their patience, and please don't hesitate to report any remaining issues you encounter at http://bugs.wesnoth.org

Just expressing appreciation for this, The server has been much better.

I'm glad the server runs faster. All the more reason to put a big honking "PayPal Donate" button on your main page instead of buried in the Wiki. Most sites that have such a button don't just take you to the standard login page for PayPal, either. They take you to a page tailored for the transaction at hand. Users wouldn't have to remember any email address. Just enter your password here please, and select the amount you wish to donate. Make the process of separating the- ah- noble individual from his/her money as painless and convenient as possible.

Hey, if you do that, I would click on it.

Is he... flicking us off?
(J/K)

I'm very glad that the server has been so much more stable recently, especially in light of the increased traffic that we've been seeing. If I had any money to spend, I would probably donate. If only because wesnoth is practically my favorite game (and defiantly my favorite open-source game.)

Either way, let's keep wesnoth running well. (^-^)v

You can get a decent VPS host for $20/month. I would suggest http://www.slicehost.com they are who I use. That comes to $240 a year, which is pretty reasonable.

We need at least 2GB of memory, among other things. That is priced at $140/month on slicehost, which is more expensive than what we've seen elsewhere.

I don't have experience with US hosting providers other then BlueHost, but isn't it much cheaper to buy a server yourself then to rent one? Then you can choose your own parts, and renting rackspace shouldn't cost more then $50,- a month for a 2U server. And yes 256MB for a server is a complete joke.
