REQUEST - troll whelp death animation

Post by Jetrel »

The troll whelp is still using the old version's animation, and rather than just delete it, it's a good excuse to upgrade the thing.

I'd prefer that we do something different from the old version; I'd like to hearken back to good old troll mythology, and have our trolls turn to stone, and then crumble apart. This isn't mandatory, if you've got some other, clever idea, however I'd prefer we didn't do the "turn to skeleton, then crumble to dust" animation. To envision this new one, think of some claymation figure falling apart, or of the Kraken in "Clash of the Titans" falling to pieces.

For the collapse of the unit, a good deal of inspiration can be taken from our "walking corpse" death animations, and how they animate this.

Rough estimate:
Frames 1~3 or so - whelp turns to stone, cracks form around its body.
Frames 4~6 or so - chunks start falling off, and collapsing in a heap, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Frames 6~12 or so - cloud of dust peaks in size and dissipates.

FINALLY. I've been hoping for AGES that someone would change that, even pointed it out to some people who were thinking of trying wesnoth spriting.

@ Jetryl: great idea, though perhaps only during the day (traditional lore is that at dawn they woudl turn to rock, we can say that in Wesnoth when they get killed they are unable to resist the effects of sunlight), so maybe a different death animation at night (if we can get someone to make 2)?
...please remember that "IT'S" ALWAYS MEANS "IT IS" and "ITS" IS WHAT YOU USE TO INDICATE POSSESSION BY "IT".--scott

this goes for they're/their/there as well

Neat idea, but no. It's a major waste of effort to make two animations for the unit, and it's also a waste to make an alternate animation for an animation that already looks cool. I'm not rejecting it, per se, but I'd really prefer if people did other, much more important things first.

Indeed. :D

Those feet are too static though. Perhaps he should take a step back?

The way that he crumbles in that one is precisely what I had in mind. As for the rest; I can roll with giving people artistic license; I'm not so sure about him standing all the way upright like that, but if you can make it look good, go ahead. (I suspect it'll look too redundant, and that we should probably have something that starts near one of his defend frames, since they'll generally be the last thing displayed before the death animation starts). So; I might suggest making him stand only partly erect, not all the way.

If you're interested in finishing that one up, please do.

only a suggestion, what about if he put his hands each one in one ear? like if his head hurts (or like when someone don't want to hear nothing)

I'll probably have a crack at this (or the higher levels if someone gets to the whelp first.)

cactusse has only three posts, so it's a good guess he's MIA

his "template" is great, though.... I'm glad someone else is continuing it
